The cancelled Prey sequel that still stings

In another timeline, there was a sequel to the 2006 game Prey. The original was loved and remembered as crazy fun, with some recalling the Native American protagonist and the alien invasion, while others remember the game for its unique portals and twists. Overall, fans are still upset that the sequel never happened, and the cancellation adds to the list of highly anticipated games that were never released. With Arkane and Bethesda’s Prey (2017) also in the mix, the legendary trailer for the sequel still lives on as one of the hardest-hitting.

In the thread, one user recounts their experience playing the original Prey and its sequel, while others express their disappointment with the final version of Prey. Another user mentions the cancelled sequel to Prince of Persia (2008), another game many hoped for and never got.

“I was a huge fan of the first one, and I was so excited for the sequel,” one user writes. “Imagine my disappointment when I discovered it was never released.”

“Prey 2 was supposed to be a better version of the first game,” they continue. “Instead, we got a different IP with the same name, with portals, and a Native American protagonist.”

“I haven’t played the new game, but I have watched videos and things,” they add. “From what I have seen, it looks great, but it doesn’t need the Prey name.”

“I also think its [sic] aimless and mindless,” another user replies. “But it’s not a bad game on its own, it just doesn’t need the Prey name.”

“I think the combat is a bit too easy, enemies go down way too fast,” another writes. “The environment is great, but the enemies are a bit bland.”

“I just find it weird to compare the two because they’re not the same,” another replies. “Prey ’17 is a good game on its own, it just doesn’t need the Prey name.”

“It’s not a bad game on its own, it just doesn’t need the Prey name,” another writes. “The name is the only thing I liked about it.”

“I hope we get to play the original Prey in VR,” another user writes. “But I guess it’s not worth it because the sequel was cancelled.”

“I don’t understand why they would use the name,” one user writes. “It’s like if Naughty Dog used the Socom name for a completely different game.”

“I would’ve been fine with a new name,” they continue. “Or even a subtitle. They didn’t have to use the name, but using it without acknowledging the troubled history of the IP is just disrespectful to the original devs.”

“I don’t know, it’s like they didn’t care,” they add. “It’s senseless and distasteful.”
