The classic MMORPG Ultima Online is still going strong

The fact that the classic MMO Ultima Online is still going strong and supported by its developer after all these years is still something of a wonder to me. Not only is it still supported and updated with new content, but the community continues to host a steady stream of official and unofficial events, with the recent Siege Perilous Server Rock Band and sightings of Lord British attacking players on InsaneUO being among recent highlights.

Now, the developer has put on a Summer Solstice cookout for players on the server, complete with games, prizes, and, of course, refreshments.

The cookout is part of the annual Ultima Online Summer Festival, and it’s the first time that the official site has given a list of games that would be available during the event.

There are 11 games in total, with the standout feature for me being the dunk tank, where players can choose an event moderator of their choice and throw them into the water. Other games include a pie eating contest, a hot dog eating contest, and even a cake eating contest, because when is enough enough?

Players can sign up for the different games on a first-come, first-served basis, and they’re rewarded with consumable barbecue and beverages, as well as commemorative tokens and random loot drops.

It’s always nice to see MMOs letting their hair down and enjoying themselves, and even with the two time slots, the demand is high, with players queueing up to participate.

While the Summer Solstice is an official event, the longevity of the Ultima Online community and its active official and unofficial events community is a testament to the enduring popularity and support for both the game itself, and for the devs’ ongoing and consistent updates.

As somebody who is younger than the game itself, it’s wonderful to see one of PC gaming’s earliest and most successful MMO communities still thriving and engaged almost 30 years after its initial launch. Here’s to many more successful events and celebrations in the future.
