Counter-Strike: Global Offensive esports league bans Crocs in dress code regulations

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Esports league, ESL, has added Crocs to its ban list in the organisation’s dress code regulations, with players potentially facing fines or disqualification for wearing the casual shoes during matches. The latest update to the mid-year rulebook ahead of the IEM Cologne 2023 tournament includes Crocs in a list of clothing items not allowed, joining flip-flops, shorts, and headwear.

Players and fans have taken to Twitter to crack jokes and express their thoughts on the ban, with Complexity player Hallzerk joking that it’s an attempt to “nerf” him. Caster Connor “cernersandals” Rhodes calls the ban “Literally 1984,” while pro Halo player Tyler Ganza suggests bringing out Heely’s as an alternative.

While some players and fans find the ban on Crocs comical, there are others who suggest that players should aim to maintain a professional appearance and dress code while representing their teams on the big stage.

“Players are professionals and are expected to maintain a respectable appearance,” the ESL rulebook states, “this includes attire that is consistent with traditional professional appearance.” While most players likely dress to impress, some still prefer to wear Crocs for their comfort and ease of movement, especially during long-duration matches.

The author of this piece (who will never play CS:GO professionally) also happens to be wearing Crocs as they write this article. With that said, we do hope the players will still look as stylish in their new shoes – just not during matches.
