The Philips Evnia 42M2N89 OLED Gaming Monitor

The Philips Evnia 42M2N89 OLED Gaming Monitor adds AMD FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, and HDR to the company’s excellent 4K, 138 Hz gaming screen, making for a full-featured and high-quality package for both gaming and multimedia purposes.

OLED is the best panel technology for gaming, thanks to its superior picture quality, with low black levels, high contrast, and vibrant colors. The 42M2N89 uses an RGB/W panel, which includes an extra white pixel to boost brightness, though it’s not the brightest OLED on the market.

That said, with incredibly low black levels and accurate out-of-box color, you won’t have to make any changes to get stunning visuals. Not only does this monitor have some of the best gaming features we’ve seen, it also has 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut and is certified FreeSync Premium by AMD.

The 42M2N89 also runs G-Sync over DisplayPort 1.4 without any issues, and includes a reliable 138Hz refresh rate. Its pixel orbiter, screen saver, and refresh functions also help prevent burn-in, though it’s hard to achieve OLED burn-in.

The Philips Evnia 42M2N89 features an RGB/W panel, which includes an extra white pixel to boost brightness. However, it’s not the brightest OLED on the market, and it can’t quite match the contrast levels of an MVA or VA panel. Even so, it still offers a stunning picture with very low black levels and accurate out-of-box color.

With incredibly low black levels and accurate out-of-box color, the 42M2N89 delivers stunning visuals. The monitor also includes gaming features like aiming points, a sniper mode, Adaptive-Sync, and a reliable 138Hz refresh rate.

The Philips Ambiglow lighting feature also adds a unique touch, allowing you to use it as a bias light or create a light show synced with sound and/or video. The stand also includes full ergonomics, with height adjustment, tilt, and swivel, though it doesn’t offer portrait mode.

The 42M2N89 comes with a beefy stand and a handheld remote for easy control. It also includes a KVM feature for connecting multiple systems using the USB ports, which is handy for gaming setups. Assembly is straightforward, with adjustable feet and a thin bezel design that allows you to mount the 42M2N89 to the wall using the included adapter bracket.

On the back, there are plenty of inputs, with DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C, meaning you can use this monitor with video at 3840x2160 and 138 Hz. Calibration is also unnecessary, as the 42M2N89 delivers accurate colors and gamma out of the box in the default Standard picture mode.

HDR performance is precise, with HDR Game mode being the recommended choice thanks to its faster response times and wide gamut. Overall, the Philips Evnia 42M2N89 offers a full-featured and high-quality package for gaming and multimedia purposes.
