Microsoft's Windows Copilot AI assistant

Microsoft’s new AI assistant, Windows Copilot, is now available for testing on Windows 11 Insiders with Dev Channel Build 23493. This powerful tool, first announced last month, brings AI assistance to the Windows 11 desktop.

Microsoft is carefully rolling out Copilot to ensure a controlled release. To access Copilot, you'll need Windows 11 build 23493 and Edge version 115.0.1901.150.

Copilot is a desktop application that integrates with the Windows 11 desktop. While it succeeds the Bing Chat assistant in Microsoft Edge, it is not fully integrated into Windows 11 yet.

Once Copilot is enabled, you can activate the AI assistant by pressing WIN + C or clicking the Copilot icon on the taskbar. The AI will appear in a side window that allows for seamless interaction without disturbing any open windows.

Similar to Bing Chat, Copilot can answer questions on any subject or topic, and it will expand to include Bing Chat plugins in the future. It is also part of a Hybrid AI loop for AI development, including Dev Home for developers and more.

New features in Dev Channel Build 23493

In addition to Copilot, this dev build includes several other notable features:

  • A new home page in the Settings app for commonly used settings. The home page, accessed by clicking the settings cog icon on the home page, includes settings for Bluetooth devices, Xbox services, Microsoft 365, personalization, account recovery, and cloud storage.
  • A recommended settings card that displays the most used settings, making it easier for users to navigate. This is especially helpful for those who are unfamiliar with the settings.
  • Native support for open-source archive file formats like .rar and .7z has been added, allowing users to open these files in File Explorer without the need for third-party software.
  • New options for Snap Layouts, enhancing multitasking capabilities.
  • An enhanced volume mixer in Quick Settings, providing more control over audio settings.
  • Improved app restoration, ensuring a smoother experience when reopening apps.

To experience these new features and try out Copilot for yourself, we recommend joining the Windows Insider Program. Staying on the cutting edge of technology is essential for keeping up with the ever-changing tech landscape, and Windows Copilot is just one of the many exciting features coming to Windows 11.
