Payday 3's Microtransactions and Season Pass

Payday 3 microtransactions were revealed alongside the news that a season pass is planned for the game. The announcement has left players who were excited for the sequel disappointed, with many expressing their displeasure at the model and declaring that they will not be supporting the game.

The Payday 2 announcement trailer left me feeling optimistic, despite my reservations about the game’s performance. I loved the initial concept, despite finding the gameplay somewhat repetitive. I was disappointed by the constant presence of cops and the lack of stealth options, but I still enjoyed it. So I was excited by the prospect of a full-blown heist game with more tactical options. But it seems Payday 3 will be no different from its predecessor in one key regard – microtransactions.

The responses echo my own disappointment at the news that Payday 3 will include microtransactions, with many expressing their disapproval at the announcement. Some reminisce about the days of expansion packs with real value, lamenting the shift towards microtransactions. Others argue that microtransactions are still prevalent in games today, despite claims that they would never be implemented.

The conversation shifts to a mention of lootboxes being added to Payday 2, causing backlash from players. Eventually, the feature was removed from the game. A user shares their experience of playing Payday 2 with a family member who tends to spend a lot on microtransactions. The user reassures that they have never spent more than $50 on the game.

Some users express their disappointment at the announcement of microtransactions and season passes in Payday 3. Others simply state that they will not be supporting the game. “Seems like they’ve done their homework,” one user writes, “I’m not playing a game where you can spend money to get better equipment.”

The conversation shifts to the always-online requirement of Payday 3, which also receives negative reactions. A user mentions the prices of battle passes in Call of Duty games, with another responding that the passes in CoD are typically better than in other shooters. One user humorously states that Payday 3 will not feature them playing the game.

Some users share their mixed feelings about Payday 2, expressing their initial excitement for a tactical heist game but disappointment by the lack of stealth options and constant presence of cops. “I loved the concept,” another writes, “but the game’s performance and gameplay mechanics made it really frustrating.”

Another user complains about the large file sizes of Payday 2 updates, but another points out that they are typically adding new content as well as fixing bugs. “The game got better,” one writes, “but the DLCs turned out to be trash.”

I’m definitely excited by the concept of Payday 3, but the microtransactions and always-online requirements leave me cold. I’ll still probably play it on Gamepass, but I doubt I’ll be spending any money on it. Maybe I’ll get my copy from Green Dot :)
