Left 4 Dead 2
Some fans are hoping that a new game from the Left 4 Dead veterans might be the true successor that they’ve been waiting for. Others, however, believe that if we stop comparing it to Left 4 Dead, it might be decent. Nostalgia plays a strong role in people’s opinions, and while some believe that Left 4 Dead should be left as nostalgia, others think that none of the imitators have been able to replicate its balance.
It’s been a while since the original Left 4 Dead 2 was released, and the fanbase is hungry for a new game. Some believe that Back 4 Blood is the answer, but there are differing opinions about the quality of the sequel. Some users mention other games like Vermintide 2 and Darktide as ones that have come close to capturing the essence of Left 4 Dead.
“Back 4 Blood was a cool game and worth playing with friends,” one user writes. “The campaign was fun to play through once, but the lack of variety and enemy creativity made the second playthrough extremely boring. The PvP is the only good thing about the game and it’s too bad they didn’t bring the campaign PvP mode.”
“I think the game was pretty fun,” another says. “Personally, I think the campaign is the best part of the game, it’s well done, the level design is amazing, and the weapons are great. The versus mode is fun too, but there are some balance issues.”
However, many express disappointment in Back 4 Blood. Some point to flaws in the game’s design, such as bullet-sponge enemies and the lack of coordination among players. Others point to problems with the game’s level design.
“It’s not even close to the classics,” one user writes. “Just look at the reviews on Steam: the campaign campaign [sic] is the only thing that’s decent.”
“The game was a great idea but the execution wasn’t there,” another says. “Level design was mediocre at best, some of the guns were trash, and the overall gameplay was dull.”
Despite the differing opinions, many agree that the gunplay in Back 4 Blood was enjoyable.
“The campaign was pretty good, [but] the versus mode is too unbalanced,” one user writes. “I like the gunplay and the zombie designs, but the level design is really bad and the game is really repetitive.”
“The gunplay is really satisfying,” another says. “The level design is pretty bad, for sure, but the PvP is almost as fun as it was in the original game.”
Some express hope that the new game from the Left 4 Dead veterans will be better. Others express their preferences regarding other games in the genre, such as World War Z: Aftermath and Vermintide.
There’s also mixed reactions to the involvement of Turtle Rock Studios. Some users express skepticism based on the studio’s past track record.
“I’m worried that the devs behind Back 4 Blood are the ones behind this new game,” one user writes. “I don’t think the first game was even close to the quality of the classics, despite the hype and the name attached to it.”
“I don’t care about Turtle Rock’s previous games,” another user replies. “They made Left 4 Dead and Evolve, so I trust them.”
Regardless of opinions about Back 4 Blood, there seems to be a desire among fans for a true successor to Left 4 Dead. Many are eagerly awaiting news from Valve about a potential new installment.
“I’m still waiting for Left 4 Dead 3,” one writes. “Back 4 Blood was decent, but I want a true successor.”
“I would love to see a Left 4 Dead 3 and Back 4 Blood 2,” another replies.
