A Dungeons and Dragons Campaign on Mastodon

A unique Dungeons and Dragons campaign is taking place on Mastodon, the federated Twitter-alternative platform. Players have the opportunity to follow along with the story and contribute to the narrative through polls. The game is being run by Dungeons Bot, a project that puts the power of a D&D game master in the hands of a bot, allowing players to enjoy a game of D&D without the need for a player to DM the adventure.

Follow the Sphinx

The game, titled 'Follow the Sphinx', is a D&D 5E SRD ruleset adventure with some tweaks. The story revolves around a party of adventurers as they journey through a forest and encounter a sphinx that challenges them with riddles.

As the story unfolds, the bot presents various situations and provides a list of actions for the players to choose from. The bot then rolls the dice to determine the outcome, with a Dungeon Guide Mastodon account offering advice on how to proceed in each situation.

Players have classes, stats, and dice rolls that determine the success of their actions. Defeating enemies rewards players with XP and gold. While this unique take on D&D may not offer the same live narrative experience as a regular play podcast, it provides an intriguing concept where multiple people control a single player character, similar to games like 'Everyone Is John' or Twitch Plays X streams.

In the past, running a similar campaign on Twitter would have been possible. However, Twitter now requires fees for automated access, while Mastodon remains open for creative projects like this.

If you're looking for a reason to switch from Elon Musk's Twitter, why not roll a D20 and escape to Mastodon? Follow the Dungeons Bot here, and learn more about Mastodon in our beginner's guide.
