Some of the Best PS3 Games That Came on Multiple Discs

If you are wondering which PS3 games came on multiple discs, you are probably also wondering what that even means in the context of modern consoles. After all, virtually all PS4 games are contained on one Blu-ray disc, and even Xbox One games rarely have to have multiple ones. In the era of the PS3, however, this was often not the case, with some games requiring multiple discs for one reason or another.

Sure, some games were just too long to fit on one disc, which is a perfectly legitimate reason, but there are many PS3 games that could be considered too big by any standards. The Xbox 360 was also not without its own problems, often requiring multiple discs even when the game was not especially big. Here’s a list of some of the biggest PS3 games that came on multiple discs.

Mass Effect

When thinking of the most celebrated BioWare games, the Mass Effect series comes to mind. The developer has brought all three games to the Xbox One in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. One aspect that was definitely in Sony’s favor in the seventh-gen console war was the Blu-ray disc of the PS3 games compared to DVDs on the Xbox 360, which was stressed even more during the generation switch.

The first game was a relatively short RPG, but by the time the third game rolled around, it was like playing a whole separate trilogy altogether. Thankfully, a solution is available if you missed out on the Xbox One remasters.

Dead Space 2

The sequel to this horror game was bigger and better in many ways. It was also so stressful that it became one of the most notoriously difficult achievements ever. If you have ever played the game on Hardcore difficulty, you will understand why. For the longest time, Xbox was seen as a space not primarily for JRPGs, but that is not true anymore.

We recommend checking out an Xbox-exclusive JRPG you must play – the excellent Lost Odyssey.

Red Dead Redemption 2

This PS4 exclusive is simply massive in every way. Is this a new standard for all future Naughty Dog games? It makes you wonder if the original Final Fantasy 7 on the PS1 came on three CDs because the graphics were so detailed, or if it was the sheer scope of the game. Never let it be said that Square is not ambitious.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Rockstar Games is the king of the open-world genre, and its most recent entry is also its biggest. While Max Payne 3 is not a particularly long game by any means, it is still one that requires discs. This is not because of the game’s size but because of the game’s social system and the fact that it forces you to find hints, carefully interview suspects, and point out the perpetrator to multiple cases. Like many trilogies, the middle Mass Effect is often considered the best, and Halo 4 is another unique case for the multiple-disc setup.

Original Xbox Games on Disc

On the PS3, almost no games require multiple discs, but this was not always the case. On the original Xbox, almost all games came on discs, and if you wanted to play a lot of the best games, you had to install them. Imagine spending so much time installing a game on either the Xbox One or PS4, and then it runs like the launch 1.0 version of Cyberpunk 2077.

Fable 3

This is a game that takes over your life for a while, and it does so by filling every available minute with quests and activities.
