Assassin's Creed Mirage

After the release of Assassin's Creed Mirage, it's worth taking a look at the entire Assassin's Creed franchise and how each mainline game fits into the series. Initially introduced with the original Assassin's Creed back in 2007, Ubisoft's annual franchise has certainly bloomed over the years, taking us to various historical periods, from Ancient Egypt to the Second Industrial Revolution in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. With Assassin's Creed Mirage on the horizon, it can be daunting if you're new to the series as to where to start before diving into the latest game.

Thankfully, there is a method to the chronological madness, and following the mainline games in order by release date is a good way to dive into the franchise before tearing into Assassin's Creed Mirage. Of course, whether you're a main series veteran or someone coming fresh to the franchise with Mirage, we've got essential tips for you to get the most out of the new game.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Set in Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War between the city state of Athens and the Persian Empire, Odyssey puts you in the sandals of the mercenary-turned-assassin, Darius. Darius is unlike other assassins in the series, having been raised in a mercenary camp in Lydia, meaning his story transpires outside of the Assassin's Creed Origins timeline.

As one of the earliest assassin's, Darius fights against Athens, who he deems has become a puppet of the Order of the Ancients. Starting the series in a period set hundreds of years prior to any other mainline entry helps to provide context to the overarching Assassin's Creed storyline throughout the series.

Assassin's Creed Origins

Set in Ancient Egypt during the Third Tuareg-Maurus War, Origins places you as Bayek of Siwa, a Medjay whose wife and child are brutally murdered by the shadowy organisation known as the Order of the Ancients. He embarks on a quest for vengeance that introduces RPG and open world mechanics to the series.

Origins also features appearances from many of the historical figures central to the overall Assassin's Creed mythology, including Cleopatra and Aya, Bayek's eventual successor.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Taking place in Norse history and mythology, Assassin's Creed Valhalla allows players to choose between a male or female character, continuing the struggle between the Hidden Ones and the Order of the Ancients.

Valhalla marks the largest game in the series to date, and sees players battling against the Viking-influenced Order of the Ancients to locate a Piece of Eden hidden deep in Odin's Gate.

Assassin's Creed Rogue

Stepping away from the traditionally dense cities of the continental Americas, Assassin's Creed Rogue takes players to the snowy north of New York and the frigid region of the Grand River Valley.

Rogue features Shay Patrick Cormac, a sailor turned Assassin hunter after he uncovers the Templars' true intention for the Assassins, leaving their halls in pursuit of the Order of the Ancients.

The Ezio trilogy

The trilogy consisting of Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations follow the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze as he embarks on a quest for revenge, uncovering a deeper conspiracy in the battle between the Assassins and Templars.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Rogue, and 3

The next trilogy of games, beginning with Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, follows the 1700s, starring Edward Kenway, Shay Patrick Cormac, and Connor Kenway respectively, each with their own goals in the Assassin-Templar conflict.

Black Flag follows privateer Edward Kenway on a quest for gold and spice, which ultimately unearths the truth about the Templars' ongoing search for ancient artefacts.

Rogue casts you as Shay Patrick Cormac, a sailor who turns Assassin Hunter after he uncovers the Templars' true intention for the Assassins. Shadowy third-person shooter AC3 takes place three years after the events of Black Flag, as Connor Kenway bravely leads his Iroquois tribe against colonialist forces.

Assassin's Creed Unity

This short turn in the series features the French Revolution and the tale of Arno Dorian seeking vengeance after the tragic murder of his adoptive father, François de la Serre, at the hands of the French Templars.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Situated during the Second Industrial Revolution in London, Assassin's Creed Syndicate casts players as either Jacob or Evie Frye.
