Asus ROG Ally Teardown: A Look Inside
The Asus ROG Ally has recently been subjected to a thorough teardown by iFixit, with the popular YouTube channel commending the handheld device for its impressive repairability. According to iFixit, opening up the Gaming device is a relatively simple process, although certain parts, such as the screen, may pose some challenges.
The iFixit team expressed their astonishment at the repairability of the Asus ROG Ally, stating that DIY enthusiasts now have more opportunities than ever to modify and upgrade the device. Opening up this handheld device is as easy as removing six screws and a few tabs/clips. The expandability of its internals is truly remarkable!
With a repairability score of seven out of ten on iFixit's scale, Asus outperforms the Valve Steam Deck in certain areas. Although opening up the Steam Deck is a more complex task, requiring heat, sanding, and caulking, it's worth noting that handheld devices are inherently less upgradable than desktop ones.
One of the key advantages of the ROG Ally's repairability lies in its easily replaceable battery. Although it is still glued down, it is also screwed down, ensuring it won't get stuck once the glue wears off. Additionally, the M.2 2230 form factor SSD is easily removable and insertable without the need for any tools.
Asus has taken steps to modularize the thumbstick assembly, making it easy to replace the sticks based on personal preferences. This modular design should simplify the aftermarket thumbstick situation. The removal and servicing of the Asus ROG Ally heatsink and fan assembly are also straightforward, with ample room for maneuvering. Other components that can be easily removed include speakers, the power button and associated ribbon, the fingerprint sensor, and the LED ring.
iFixit did encounter some challenges when it came to removing the screen, as Asus opted to use glue. While Asus has not yet provided official spare parts for the ROG Ally, they may do so in the future. On the other hand, a modular fan and heatsink design should facilitate fan replacement, and other components are also easily removable - the speaker/filter assembly, I/O board, and chipset are all modular.
