A recent Banjo Kazooie player prompts others to share their own experiences with the N64 game
A recent Banjo Kazooie player who, as a 90’s kid, missed out on the Rare platform game prompts others who are playing it for the first time as adults to share their experiences. They praise the unique worlds, excellent music, and challenging collectibles, with others reminiscing about playing the originals on N64 and later revisiting them on PC with an emulator.
“I’m currently playing Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie for the first time as an adult,” the original poster (OP) “jvzt” writes on Reddit. “I’m loving these games so much and I’m really excited to play them again. I had no idea how good they were back in the day.” They go on to share their love for Nuts & Bolts, too.
“I haven’t played them since I was a kid,” another user, “tkj5”, replies. “I just downloaded Nuts & Bolts through Gamepass and I’m super excited to play it.” Many others share their love for the series, too – some even still playing Banjo games on their N64 consoles.
“I love the N64,” another user, “Timberwolf_x”, replies. “I’m a 90s kid too and I think it was a great era of Gaming.” They go on to rank the N64 as one of their favorite consoles, second only to the PS2.
Another user, “Toggan”, shares an anecdote about a fly causing a game crash – “I was playing the game, and as I was jumping around the first level, a fly came in through the window and landed on the cartridge,” they explain. “The console froze, and when I turned it off and on again, it said ‘Disc read failure’.” They add that they still own their old consoles, including the N64.
There’s also a lot of reminiscing about various Banjo catchphrases, with several users sharing their fondness for the series. Another user, “dr_mii_ree”, suggests that Mumbo should have had more moves in the game – “His moveset was so underused!” They also mention a hidden puzzle game, accessible by interacting with a picture in Banjo’s house after beating the game.
Talking about Banjo Tooie, “tkj5” describes the game”s level design progression as “absolutely terrible” – “I remember getting to Gobi’s Valley and thinking ‘they can’t be serious, this is the last world!’” Another user, “Snoop_doggy_dogg”, says that they “didn”t like Banjo Tooie as much as Kazooie” but adds that “it was still a pretty fun game.”
One user, “xGrootx”, reminisces about playing the originals on N64 and later revisiting them on PC with an emulator: “I loved the original Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. I played through the first two on N64, and then I later played them on my PC using an emulator,” they explain. “I would love to play through the N64 games on my Switch, but I don’t want to buy an adapter.”
Another mentions playing the third installment in the series: “I played the first three Banjo games on N64 and then on PC using an emulator. I also played Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts on Xbox through Gamepass about two years ago, but I have never played the [later] games.”
“I started Banjo on my Switch after not playing it since it first came out,” another user, “N0n0”, shares. “I completed it all and I loved it.” They go on to describe how Banjo Kazooie was their first N64 game, even though they later played Ocarina of Time as well.
Finally, one user simply describes the games as “absolutely amazing” – they also express interest in playing them again, asking for information on emulators, which another user offers to share. You can find that conversation here.
