Fire Emblem Series: A Brief Overview
The Fire Emblem series, which began in 1990, has become one of Nintendo’s most beloved and consistent IPs. Despite initial challenges and a case of false advertising during its Western release, 2012’s Fire Emblem: Awakening reshaped the combat and social systems while maintaining the turn-based strategy elements that make it unique. The success of Awakening paved the way for spin-offs and adaptations featuring iconic characters and locations from the past. Here’s a ranking of every Fire Emblem spin-off.
Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga (1997)
The first Fire Emblem spin-off, Archanea Saga, is technically a prequel to the series' first game - Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. Originally available exclusively for the Satellaview, a device that allowed you to download games for the Super Famicom via satellite, Archanea Saga was split into four episodes, each starring a different character. The original version is no longer available, but all four episodes were eventually remade for the DS remake of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. While each episode is short and sweet, they stay close to the core concepts of the main series and may not be considered fully-fledged spin-offs.
Fire Emblem Warriors (2017)
Following in the footsteps of Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors brings the Musou-inspired spin-off concept to the Fire Emblem universe. While the idea of combining iconic characters from different games sounds intriguing, the execution of Fire Emblem Warriors falls short, resulting in a lackluster and forgettable experience. Developed for both the 3DS and the Nintendo Switch, the game suffers from scaled-down arenas and lazy UI elements. The cast also disappoints, featuring characters from only a few Fire Emblem games instead of a representation of the entire series.
Fire Emblem Fates (2015)
Despite its flaws, Fire Emblem Fates introduces various positive additions to the series. The Avatar customization and Dual System are notable features that contribute to the overall gameplay experience. Additionally, Fates improves upon mechanics from previous games, such as the Bottomless Vault from Fire Emblem Awakening. The Royal version of the game offers an expanded edition, including the extra Revelation storyline in addition to the base game's Revelations.
Fire Emblem Crossbell Crisis (2005)
Fire Emblem Crossbell Crisis is a spin-off that shares connections with the third game in the Trails in the Sky series. While it is set in the same universe as Trails in the Sky, it can be considered an original title separate from the series. Players assume the role of Kyle Stallior, an American special agent who becomes involved in the conflict in Crossbell City between the police force and the 'culprits.'
