A New PS4 Emulator Project Emerges

If you've been yearning to play Bloodborne on your PC, a promising solution may be on the horizon. A new emulator project, known as RPCSX, has made its debut, spearheaded by the same skilled programmer responsible for RPCS3, one of the most acclaimed PlayStation 3 emulators that has been in development for a decade.

RPCSX is currently in its nascent stages, and it remains uncertain whether it will eventually be able to run commercial games. Nonetheless, the emulator shows promise, making it worthwhile to keep an eye on its progress.

The programmer, who is identified as 'RPCS3' on Discord and GitHub, has even expressed the potential for PS5 support. “PS5 is similar to PS4, so emulation should be straightforward,” they stated. “But it’s not a priority at the moment.”

At present, RPCSX is an emulator that lacks the capability to run any games. It is likely years away from achieving commercial viability, assuming it ever reaches that point.

Currently developed for Linux, the emulator does not yet support Windows. Additionally, it is still in its early stages and is unable to boot games. Given the lack of a clear timeline for game compatibility, it could be a year or more before games even begin to boot, let alone run smoothly.

It is important to remember that RPCSX is led by the same individual who initiated RPCS3, with the involvement of other experienced contributors. Nevertheless, considering that RPCS3 is still years away from running commercial games, it is crucial to temper your expectations.

There are other PS4 emulator projects such as fpPS4, Orbital, Kyty, and GPCS4. None of these projects are in significantly better shape than RPCSX, but the emulator's developer enjoys a reputation that may give it an advantage in terms of attracting interest and contributors.

The process of emulating the PS4's operating system, grappling with encryption, shaders, and constructing a user interface poses considerable challenges. While adding Windows support is a future goal, it remains a long and arduous journey.
