Former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay, who is synonymous with the role as the first Black Bachelorette, recently shared her thoughts on new lead Charity Lawson in an interview. The Bachelorette Season 20

Responding to a question about Lawson, Lindsay explains, “I love Charity. She’s so authentic, so confident. She’s also so fluid and very graceful in the way that she handles all beautiful, difficult situations. Her journey on this is gonna be unique and exciting.”

As the conversation continues, Lindsay emphasizes the importance of having a diverse cast during the show – something that she, herself, continues to support. She says, “We’re in the age, during which we’re hopefully progressing, where we need to make sure that we’re always prioritizing representation and inclusivity.”

She briefly touches on being a lead on the show, expressing her advice to Lawson on navigating the experience, saying, “I think the two things I would have for Charity is, one, be discerning, when you’re trying to speak with [the men] about yourself and about life, because that’s a pretty powerful thing to do, still in 2019. And, two, I hope there’s a level of awareness that, this story that she’s telling gave us the opportunity to be able to talk about things that we usually can’t talk about.”

Lastly, she describes her own journey as a positive one, “I mean, for me, [the experience] was positive. It was great for me, it’s added to my life in such an incredible way. I always hope that the journey that people go on leads to something great, provides them with a learning experience. If they can use that platform to create positive change, that’s beautiful.”

A new trailer for the premiere of The Bachelorette Season 20 was recently released, as well. Of course, Lawson makes an appearance, as do a slew of other men who will likely vie for her heart. The level of excitement surrounding the show is palpable, due in large part to Lawson, who is quite confident in her abilities to be a strong Bachelorette. Citing the opportunity as a way to be an inspiration, Lawson says, “I can’t imagine a better time than now to be the first black bachelorette.”

If Lawson’s and Lindsay’s words are any indication, the upcoming season of The Bachelorette is sure to be a powerful one.
