A Geoguessr Mapper Takes a Stand

A Geoguessr mapper, known for creating some of the most popular maps for the Google Maps-based game, has taken a bold step in protest of changes made by the new Geoguessr management that they believe are detrimental to players. In a move that has shocked the community, the mapper has deleted all their content.

Geoguessr is a game that challenges players to identify their location in the world using clues from Google Maps. While it may seem simple, there is a lot of hard work that goes into creating and curating maps for the game.

Most of Geoguessr's maps are created by the community, with the exception of the standard 'World' map provided by the website itself. However, this map can sometimes lead to unplayable or overrepresented areas.

The Popularity of A Diverse World

One of the most popular maps in recent years is A Diverse World, created by the mapper. This map offers a diverse range of locations in terms of geography and culture, making it a favorite among players. It has even been integrated into the World map itself due to its popularity.

However, with the recent changes implemented by new Geoguessr management, A Diverse World, along with other maps, will be impacted. Players will have to deal with the same overrepresented areas, which takes away from the unique experience A Diverse World offers.

In a Medium post, the mapper explained their decision to delete their account. They believe that the new management is prioritizing profit over the players' experience. The mapper also blames investors Spotify, H&M, and Candy Crush developer King for the changes made to the game.

As a result, the mapper has not only deleted their account but also cancelled their subscription and removed all their maps from the game. They are even considering porting A Diverse World to another game called GeoHub.

While there are technical limitations with using Google's free API, the mapper envisions a decentralized ecosystem where players can rehost GeoHub using their own API keys. This would allow for a player-owned and -controlled game, free from capitalist practices and unnecessary features.

Although the viability of this vision is uncertain, the mapper's dedication to a more player-centric Gaming experience is commendable. It remains to be seen whether they will achieve their goal, but their actions have certainly sparked a conversation within the Geoguessr community.
