The GPD Win 4: Bigger, Better, and More Powerful

The GPD Win 4, a handheld Gaming PC that bears a striking resemblance to the PSP, has received an impressive upgrade courtesy of AMD. This new iteration of the device now boasts the chip maker's latest APU, bringing a significant improvement over its predecessor, the GPD Win 3. However, potential buyers may be deterred by its higher price tag.

Visually, the GPD Win 4 looks almost identical to its predecessor. However, under the hood, it features a faster CPU, GPU, and increased storage capacity. Despite these enhancements, the starting price of the GPD Win 4 is actually slightly lower than that of the GPD Win 3.

The GPD Win 4 is available starting at $800, offering 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. If you're willing to invest more, you can opt for the Ryzen 7 7840U chip, 64GB of RAM, and a 4TB SSD, which will significantly boost the device's performance.

One notable component of the GPD Win 4 is its AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU, which is also utilized in the Asus Rog Ally. In our review, we praised the Asus Rog Ally for its exceptional gaming performance. It will be interesting to see how the GPD Win 4 fares in real-world tests when it is released in August.

On the other hand, the Asus Rog Ally, which also features AMD's latest APU, is already available for purchase, starting at $700. This makes it nearly $100 cheaper than the newly unveiled GPD Win 4, offering the same hardware specifications.

GPD proudly claims that their new handheld device is the world's smallest AMD handheld, and it's hard to dispute that. With similar dimensions to its predecessor, measuring 220mm wide and 92mm tall, the GPD Win 4 has a slightly thicker profile.

Additionally, the GPD Win 4 sports a 6-inch 1080p IPS panel with slim bezels, ensuring it stands out from the competition. Although it may not offer the best display on the market, its 60Hz refresh rate is sufficient for most games, even if it doesn't support 4K or high frame rates.
