Since his astounding debut on the Megadrive in 1991, Sonic has remained one of the most recognisable video game characters ever. The hedgehog and his compadres have appeared in every type of game, from 2D platformers to RPGs. Some games are better than others, but what is the longest Sonic game? With hundreds of titles to choose from, finding the best Sonic games is no easy task.

The longest Sonic game

Despite his chequered past, there are a few main series Sonic games that last 20 hours, or more. We’ve pinpointed the longest ones with the help of HowLongToBeat.

Sharing an unusual RPG-like premise with the Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games, Sonic Battle is a 3D arena fighting game similar to the Smash Bros. series. Despite the different format, it’s a similar enough experience, meaning a main story lasts around 10.5 hours.

In a series first, Sonic Heroes features not one, but three different teams of characters who each tackle a single level together, using teamwork and synth powers. Completing all campaigns means putting your best team forward for around 11.5 hours.

Sonic Unleashed is pretty divisive in the fandom. While the odd day/night system and Werehog of night mechanics aren’t the most popular, fans and critics recognised the bold attempt to change the gameplay formula. Completing both day and night levels adds up to an approximate total of 15 hours of gameplay.

This one is a bit of a surprise, but Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is a fully-fledged RPG set within the Sonic universe. A lengthy adventure through the world of the Emerald Coast and beyond adds up to around 15.5 hours.

Yes, Sonic ‘06 (or Sonic The Hedgehog) is a long game. Its notorious history is overshadowed by a main story that lasts roughly 16 hours. Critics pan the game for its controls, camera, and disliked romantic subplot, but there’s no denying it is a long experience – even if it’s a pretty darn bad one.

Not exactly a standalone title, Sonic Frontiers is an open-world platformer whose 3D platforming offers an immense adventure that takes just over 16.5 hours to complete. Despite a metacritic score that suggests it’s a misunderstood gem, we thought Frontiers was okay, but nothing special.

Many people consider this to be the longest Sonic game, because of its massive hubs and level size. Much like Sunset Overdrive, players are treated to a massive, sandbox world in which they can interact with townsfolk, take on missions, and search for collectibles.
