Discover essential tips and tricks for a successful playthrough of OTXO
Looking for some OTXO tips and tricks? Before you boot up this roguelite action shooter and blast your way through the Mansion filled with lethal enemies, there are some crucial bits of knowledge you should keep in mind.
These early tips will help you get the most out of your playthrough with avoided mechanics and new mechanics for you to appreciate. In OTXO, it’s not just about firing at baddies – a few roguelites and RPG games allow you to kick doors or chests, but in this one, kicking is far more integral.
Basic tips and tricks
There’s a lot to learn about OTXO, such as not just the early tips mentioned here, but a number of guns, enemy abilities, and mechanics. To save you from having to go into the early game blind, here are some tips that you need to know before you even set foot in the Mansion.
Needless to say, minor story spoilers may be present in the following sections, but we’ve kept them as vague as possible.
When you pick up a new gun in OTXO, you discard any unused shots in your current gun, and put in a new magazine. That may sound straightforward enough, but this means you can’t just keep using the same ones once they’re out of magazines.
Further, you can even kick enemies to death in early rooms using the Focus mechanic. If you hold down the fire button while in Focus, your character will auto-aim at one foe at a time, killing them slowly and silently. It’s a far better killing method in some rooms than using firearms.
Acclaimed roguelite for PC games FTL popularized the mechanic of picking up fallen guns, and now it’s commonplace. It’s an easy way to have more variety in your weapons pick without having to worry about running out of bullets, so it makes sense that OTXO would have it.
As far as early tips go, this could be one of the most crucial, especially early on. Since you can only carry one gun per bullet type, you won’t always have a gun of that type when you pick up a new gun from a fallen minion. You can use a weapon picker to change what you’re using, but that takes precious seconds.
That said, there are some weapons, such as the Hunting Rifle you get early on in the game, which are so good, it’s worth always keeping it with you. You can always switch back to your previous weapon if it becomes the more viable choice.
So, you’re ready to start your OTXO journey. Before you get overwhelmed by Memorare, coin farming, and getting the best guns, you need to make sure you’re stocked up on important items and have an understanding of certain mechanics. In this guide, we stay pretty general with bits and pieces of the combat, as well as unlocking rooms and more.
Bar mechanics and Liquor
Before you even leave the Bar, it’s worth saving some coin because you can import Liquor for a price at the Bar. The bartender offers performance-enhancing Liquor for coin, allowing you to bolster your gameplay in any run when you’re ready to reap the benefits.
There’s also a lady at the Bar who can import new Liquors for a price, which can be paid across multiple runs. The Liquors range from a 10% damage boost to staggering enemies via explosions or gases. The recent update also introduced a new Liquor themed around poison. The price for each Liquor is three times its base price, so it could get expensive, but it’s worth saving money for future Bar visits and to spend at Misplaced Rooms.
These are areas we’re keeping mysterious for now since discovering them for yourself is a big part of the early game. Suffice to say, they’re few and far between, secretive, and bursting with lore. To find them, you need to locate the door key, then head to the eastern wing doorway in the garden. Inside, you’ll find lore and gacha dispensers offering a chance to get new firearms.
It’s much easier to kill enemies quietly than many other roguelite games since your gun misfires if you fire it too close to an enemy. Rather, to kill them silently, you need to either use a gun that automatically strangles or a Silenced Barrel, both of which require unlocking.
