The popular, open-source retro Gaming OS Recalbox introduces version 9.1, and in doing so, boasts the addition of a hardware accessory called the Recalbox RGB JAMMA. The cutely named board itself blends practicality with cuteness, as it enables gamers to connect period-accurate arcade hardware to the Raspberry Pi using the GPIO.

Recalbox RGB JAMMA

Similar in size to the Raspberry Pi 4, the JAMMA interface also complements it nicely, offering easy connection of JAMMA harnesses for video, input, and configuration. Jointly used with Recalbox 9.1, this enables authentic gaming using period-accurate inputs and display modes.

Crowdfunded through Sell3r, the Recalbox RGB JAMMA project has already reached 713% of its target with 23 days remaining. Assuming it reaches its goal, the team says it hopes to ship the first orders in October 2023. Units start at just €60, which works out to just over $65.

Note that crowdfunding a project, in and of itself, doesn’t guarantee receiving a finished product. It’s important to understand that crowdfunding a project is more of an investment in the project’s success, rather than a pre-order.

Recalbox 9.1: Pulstar

Recalbox 9.1, codenamed “Pulstar,” brings several updates to the retro-gaming OS, and now also supports the RGB JAMMA board. In addition to that, it also now supports retro gaming handhelds from Anbernic and Experimental Pi’s PiBoy XRS.

Additional images are also available for the original Raspberry Pi Zero and the GPICase2W, a Game Boy shell compatible with the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.

Whether you’re already an avid Recalbox enthusiast or just looking to try out a new arcade setup at home, it seems the Pi’s open-source OS is blooming with more possibilities than ever. For all the latest tech, keep an eye on our constantly updated gaming hub.
