The Cycle: Frontier, an extraction shooter, is shutting down after barely being online for a year. Despite still having around 2,000 players, the game is not financially viable and will be sunset on September 27, 2023. The game is closing down despite mixed reviews and a consistent player count on Steam.

Initially gaining popularity from big streamers starting to play it in front of hundreds of thousands of people, the free PC game was initially buoyed by positive reviews. However, the game was heavily impacted by cheaters, leading to a significant decrease in the player base. The developer, Yager, made efforts to upgrade server infrastructure and implement anti-cheat measures, but it wasn’t enough.

In an announcement made with a heavy heart, Yager describes The Cycle: Frontier as a success as it brought in an influx of players. However, the cheater activity impacted its sustainability. “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to curb the cheaters and implement the measures outlined in our previous announcement, the game is no longer financially viable,” the announcement reads.

“As such, we have decided to sunset the game on September 27, 2023. The final patch and more information about refunds will be provided in the coming weeks.” Despite mixed reviews, the game maintained a consistent player count on Steam.

The closure of The Cycle: Frontier marks the end of an era for players who invested time and money into the game. Its demise also raises questions about the impact of cheaters on the Gaming industry.

In the meantime, The Cycle: Frontier season 3 pass remains free, and the game is offering a 95% discount on in-game shop items, to encourage players to experience the game’s final days. The real-money purchases will also be stopped, and refunds will be issued for purchases made after June 14, 2023.
