Longtime Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter Not Impressed by AI Scripts

David Hayter, the veteran voice actor known for his role as Solid Snake, has expressed his disappointment with the quality of AI scripts. In a recent interview, Hayter criticized the lack of soul in AI-generated content, stating that "the last thing we need is more soulless words."

Hayter highlighted the issue of deepfake voice replication, pointing out examples where AI fails to capture the unique emotional depth and subtlety of human performances. One such example is the replication of President Biden's voice using AI, which Hayter described as lacking soul and feeling clearly manufactured.

In a YouTube video Hayter watched, AI voices of President Biden, former President Obama, and former President Trump ranked their favorite Resident Evil games. Hayter pointed out the uncanny valley effect, emphasizing the absence of the subtle artistic choices that make human performances engaging and authentic.

The proliferation of AI scriptwriting technology is a matter of concern for Hayter, who noted that "AI voicewriters already exist and they're terrible." He believes that the technology fails to understand the intricate work and emotional depth that actors bring to their performances.

While Hayter isn't worried about AI stealing voices, he urges people to recognize the importance of actors and the uniqueness they bring to their performances. Replicating the thousands of subtle emotional adjustments that prolific voice actor Jennifer Hale can provide is a challenging, if not impossible, task for AI.

Hayter also believes that actors should be protected against unauthorized use of their voices, highlighting the legal issues associated with AI-generated content. However, he remains unfazed by the technology itself, as he is convinced that AI will always lack the essential element of soul.

As concerns about AI taking over various industries continue to be voiced, questions arise regarding the legal protections that must be put in place. While some advocates highlight the benefits of AI, others hope to dispel fears of a potential future dominated by intelligent machines. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that AI is still in its early stages, with much more to be explored and developed.
