The Sonic the Hedgehog IDW Comic Introduces Tangle and Whisper
The Sonic the Hedgehog comic run by IDW has introduced two new characters named Tangle and Whisper. Fans have shipped these characters together for years, and it seems that the writers share the same sentiment. The character introductions came as part of the “Sonic: Fast Forward” storyline, set in the future of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.
IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comics have been known for including queer characters and relationships. However, the fandom has been divided over which characters are actually queer and ship-worthy. Writer Ian Flynn recently took to Twitter to confirm that “the majority” of creatives working on the comics believe Tangle and Whisper are lesbians.
Flynn clarifies that while the characters are not officially confirmed as gay or lesbian, the writers personally want them to be or believe they are queer. He mentions that he doesn’t have the power to make the ship canon, implying that it’s up to Sega. Nonetheless, he encourages fans to continue shipping any Sonic character.
While Flynn does not explicitly state that Tangle and Whisper are gay, he expresses that he avoids definitive statements to avoid disappointing fans if things change in the future. This suggests that Sega may have a say in pairing them up with male characters instead.
Although Tangle and Whisper are not officially confirmed as lesbians, the fact that many of the creatives behind the comics support the ship is exciting for fans. Whether the writers have the opportunity to make the ship canon remains uncertain, but for now, it’s definitely something to ship about.
In the past, it has been reported that Sega is against Sonic characters being involved in romantic relationships. However, this has not stopped IDW from introducing queer characters into the series.
Tangle and Whisper: New Additions to the Sonic Comic
Tangle and Whisper are the newest members of the Sonic comic cast, introduced as part of IDW’s “Fast Forward” storyline. Issue #89, released on August 14, reveals that they both come from the same village but took different paths. Whisper became a member of the Anti-Mobius Police Force, while Tangle became a mobian thief.

The news of the “majority” of Sonic comic writers supporting the Tangle and Whisper ship is currently trending on social media. If you’re interested in seeing more examples of queer relationships in anime and manga, check out some of our favorite anime and manga that feature LGBTQ characters.
