Sonic the Hedgehog Remakes and Classic Sega Series

Sonic the Hedgehog is no stranger to new entries in his story – Sega has been releasing new Sonic games regularly for the past decade – but the blue blur’s creators are now considering “reboots and remakes” for classic Sonic games. The news comes from Sega’s own president, Yukio Sugino, who talks about the potential for remakes alongside new game development in several classic Sega series.

Recent announcements for remakes like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Super Mario RPG, and Silent Hill 2, to name just a few, have proven that remakes, reboots, and rehashes aren’t going away anytime soon. Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to avoid diving too deeply into that remake pool, instead building on itself to keep things fresh.

Now, however, it looks like Sega is interested in revisiting some of its classic series, specifically pointing at Sonic as one it’s interested in focusing on. The conversation around reboots started when the Famitsu interviewer mistakenly called Samba de Amigo: Party Central a reboot of the series.

“It’s not a reboot,” Sugino clarified about Samba, before talking about Sonic Superstars, which he described as “a return to 2D action.” The interview then turned to a question about potential remakes and reboots.

“We consider reboots and remakes for series depending on what is ‘the best way to do this IP,’” Sugino said. “For example, what I mentioned before about the 2D action of Sonic Superstars, we considered this to be the best way to do Sonic.

“We have to do new things, but also need to select which is appropriate at this time for each IP, such as ‘This is the best way to do this IP.’ For example, for Sonic, we’re considering reboots and remakes alongside new game development as well.”

Sonic is one of Sega’s signature IPs, so it’s not too surprising to see it mentioned alongside the likes of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. No specific information was provided about which classic Sonic games might be getting a new lease of life, but fans have been vocal about wanting a Sonic Adventure remake for a very long time, so that would certainly be an obvious choice. A Sonic Heroes reboot could also be a potential consideration as well.

The news reflects the general trend in Gaming, with many other franchises receiving similar treatment. Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog can look forward to potential remakes and reboots that could bring new life to the classic games they know and love.

The success of recent remakes in other franchises shows that there is a market for nostalgic gaming experiences, and Sega’s interest in reboots and remakes demonstrates the company’s commitment to keeping its classic IPs relevant and appealing to both old and new fans.

While we wait to find out which specific games will be chosen for reboots or remakes, the prospect of revisiting beloved Sonic games in a modernized form is certainly exciting for fans of the franchise.
