Sonic Prime's Second Season: Packed with References
With the second season of Sonic Prime now underway, fans are already spotting some excellent easter eggs and references to various Sonic games, including Sonic Adventure, Sonic Unleashed, and even the much-maligned Sonic movie. It’s no surprise that the show would continue in this self-referential manner, given how prevalent it was in the first season; but with so many episodes already underway, it’s clear that the creators are really putting a lot of thought and care into incorporating these hidden gems.
I, for one, am always excited to spot a reference to the games or movie, and I imagine many longtime fans are the same. So, with that in mind, I decided to check out what the more eagle-eyed fans have been sharing on social media, and I picked out some of the best easter eggs and references I could find so far in the new season.
Easter Eggs and References in Sonic Prime Season 2
In episode four, titled “No Way Out,” Sonic recreates the iconic cover pose from Sonic Adventure after retrieving a Prism Shard from the pirate version of Knuckles, Dread.
Episode seven, “Cracking Down,” features a reference to Sonic Adventure 2 when Shadow and Nine meet, with Nine commenting on how Sonic and Shadow could be twins, to which Shadow asserts himself as “the ultimate lifeform.”
In the second episode, “Battle in the Boscage,” Sonic battles one of the Chaos Council’s robots in a way reminiscent of the Sonic Unleashed intro, complete with slow-motion sequences.
And that’s not all; there are even a few references to the live-action Sonic movie in the final few episodes of the season, involving Sonic harnessing the power of the Paradox Prism. On two occasions, the camera pans around Sonic in a similar fashion to the movie’s climax.
As a long-time fan of the series, I’m thrilled to see these references. They’re always a delightful treat for me, rewarding my dedication and knowledge of the Sonic franchise. Seeing them crop up in the show just makes me feel good.
If you’re a fan of Sonic and enjoy spotting these kinds of references, I urge you to check out season two of Sonic Prime. It’s a must-watch.
In the meantime, you can catch up on the first season if you haven’t already, and keep your eyes peeled for even more easter eggs in season two of the best anime on Netflix.
