Wondering what the Super Mario Bros. Wonder art style will look like? After the announcement of a new Mario title during Nintendo Direct, we are showcasing what we know about the videogame so far. But one thing that stands out with this 2D entry is its art direction, which seems to be ditching Nintendo’s “New” style since Super Mario Bros. Wii. Dedicated fans have been waiting for years to see a change, and based on social media reactions, it is a hit.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
When Nintendo Switch’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder reveal stole the show, it is easy to get swept up in the excitement for the new gadgets. Mario’s ability to transition into a wild elephant is thrilling, but it is the art direction that has fans buzzing with excitement.
Nintendo has been stuck on the “New” art style since 2006’s Super Mario Galaxy 2. While it made the leap to 3D, the 2D Mario games have stuck to this style and fans have slowly started to get fed up. Nobody was expecting Super Mario Bros. Wonder to drop the art style in one fell swoop, but a small tweak highlighting more of the classic Mario style would have been fine too.
Thankfully, that’s exactly what we got with a slight alteration to Mario’s design. Drawing comparisons to art from classic titles like Super Mario 64, fans are pleased that the 2D Mario series is shaking things up.
“Fans showed their joy over the announcement through social media, with many noting the announcement’s art direction,” Nintendo Life reports. “Mario’s subtly changed design and realistic palettes are warmly welcomed by fans, especially after these past few years of the ‘New Mario’ style.”
Having a bit of personality with Mario’s slightly altered design adds a welcome shake-up to the 2D Mario series. As other characters like Luigi also get face lifts, we get to see more expressive animations and facial expressions. Compounded with the interesting new gameplay features showcased in the trailer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is shaping up to be a high-priority title.
While we wait to hear more about Mario’s next 2D adventure, fans are thrilled to hear about a remake of Super Mario RPG. The beloved RPG will hit the Nintendo Switch this year, with updated versions of fan-favorite characters like Geno and Mallow.
