Super Mario World SNES Console Review
In this week's Destructoid Community Spotlight, a user shares their experience opening a brand new SNES console. Part of the Nintendo Classics range, the question arises whether it's still worth picking one up for 2023.
The user expresses their uncertainty about the internal components of the SNES console degrading due to age. They wonder if a refurbished console is more likely to work than a pristinely packaged one. Additionally, they inquire about the performance of the original control from an early 90s SNES compared to modern controllers.
As it turns out, refurbished SNES consoles are indeed more reliable than their pristinely packaged counterparts. Furthermore, the original control from an early 90s SNES still outperforms modern controllers. Although the internal save may no longer function, the SNES games themselves remain solid. It is even possible to restore the save function for decades by replacing the batteries in SNES cartridges.
Some SNES cartridges may require checking and replacing capacitors. A user suggests using CR2032 batteries with presoldered tabs to replace the batteries in a Game Boy Color cartridge. Others argue that it is perfectly acceptable to play with the SNES console instead of keeping it in an airtight display case. Despite the box for the SNES console being opened and experiencing some wear, the console can still be enjoyed.
Some users recommend putting the console in an airtight display case while playing with wireless controller adapters or airtight seals for the controller cables. However, others prefer the uniform look of the North American [NA] version and find it to be more functional in the long run. There are differing opinions on the aesthetics of the PAL version, with some stating it has a better-looking shell and box.
Unfortunately, there is no indication of the price of the brand new SNES console. The user mentions paying around three-fiddy for it, but it is unclear whether that is in US dollars or UK pounds.
Many users express excitement and envy, wishing the user well and expressing their desire to own one themselves. Some users request a photo of the box for the brand new SNES console, while one user simply asks, "Why did you open it?"
