Discover the Longest Video Games Ever
All video games come in different shapes and sizes, from all-consuming epics to adorable indie darlings. But what are the stalwarts of the industry when it comes to length? We have delved into the depths of Steam, GOG, and various Gaming sites to bring you a rundown of the longest video games ever made.
There is no hard and fast rule as to how long a video game needs to be. Great games come in all lengths, from Soulsborne dungeons that last a few precious hours, to masterful JRPGs that can be completed in a few weeks or even years if one is particularly dedicated. However, the following list is dominated by JRPGs with incredibly long, methodical combat that takes place over several hundred hours.
1. Persona 3
Hours: 710
Atlus' Persona series tells the tale of an ordinary high school student who you control. But there is more to it than that. Over the course of the game, you will join a special group known as the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (aka SEES), which investigates a strange anomaly known as the Dark Hour.
The Dark Hour is a special time that exists between midnight and 1 am. During this time, the city becomes devoid of people and traffic, and the only things that exist are you, the group, and the terrifying monsters known as Shadows. In addition to this surreal mystery, you live a regular life as a student, making friends, going on dates, and studying for exams. Clearly, this is not just another JRPG.
2. Grand Theft Auto V
Hours: 625 (with every story DLC)
Rockstar's Los Santos is a vast playground. Even without all the cool story DLC like the Mustache Bay expansion, players can still roam the sandbox of this GTA 5 simulator for around 600 hours. That's roughly a year of their life in video game time. While some players are already pushing beyond 1,000 hours into the game, as it's aging rather well, it's no wonder GTA V has become one of the best-selling games of all time. Players can pick up the GTA 5 bundle on PC to revisit the story, which includes all the story DLC.
3. Ragnarok Odyssey
Hours: 601
Take the randomly-generated worlds of Diablo, add the heady cocktail of Dynasty Warriors, stir in a fistful of dungeons from Zelda, and throw in a dollop of anime silliness, and you have Ragnarok Odyssey. It's a wonderful game.
