Are you looking for the luckiest videogame characters? Protagonists in almost every form of media are a pretty lucky bunch, and heroes like Nathan Drake and BJ Blazkowics certainly live up to that archetype. Some of the best videogame characters are luckier than most, and their luck manifests itself in near-supernatural abilities, notorious luck-based health systems, enduring beyond the wrath of any villain, and arriving at their destination with zero forewarning of their destination’s surroundings.
The Walking Dead’s Clementine
Clementine is a perfect example of this trend. Not only has she survived numerous shootouts with human enemies and encroaching hordes of zombies, she has survived car crashes, explosions, and even imprisonment. Her capacity to survive is as unquantifiable as it is lucky, and that’s why she tops our list of the luckiest videogame characters ever. Here are some more lucky characters with supernatural survival skills.
Lara Croft
Lara Croft, the well-travelled tomb-raiding heroine, has taken down dinosaurs, survived collapsing tombs, and outwitted ancient traps that would kill anyone caught in their grasp. While Lara’s proficiency in combat and her general athleticism is no doubt a factor in her survival, even she can benefit from the forces of luck at certain moments. Her games aren’t shy about giving her some good fortune from time to time, such as in the 2013 release of the prequel game, where an early pursuit of an enemy ends with Lara falling from a plane and catching on the shoulder of a moving train.
BJ Blazkowics
Then there is BJ Blazkowics from Wolfenstein: The New Order, who manages to live through every explosion and army that comes his way. BJ must also be incredibly lucky in his personal life, as he manages to maintain a relationship with Anya throughout the entire game. BJ Blazkowic’s luck must be endless because he was almost blown up by the atom bomb in Wolfenstein: The New Order, and yet he still managed to live through that.
Chloe Price
Chloe Price from Life is Strange seems to almost always have her best friend Max there to save her from the universe’s attempts to kill her. Maybe that’s why she got so angry when she thought Max was sleeping with her new boyfriend in the first game’s ending – she figured Max must get her into as much trouble as possible.
Kazuma Kiryuu
From Takashi Miike’s Yakuza to Ryu Ga Gotoku, Kazuma Kiryuu never fails to win the hearts of woman, fend off goons, maintain sheer composure in the face of danger, and make onlookers weak with envy. Kiryuu is much more than the typical bad boy archetype; he is the baddest of them all, able to take down hundreds of men without much trouble. Kiryuu is able to endure some diabolical injuries and yet comes out with a (mostly) happy ending, usually with a new woman in his life.
Cole Phelps
Cole Phelps doesn’t just solve every single case he comes across: he seems to solve every single crime in the L.A. Noire recreation of 1947. Cole Phelps is also much luckier than his partner, Rusty, because Cole seems to avoid trouble while Rusty gets shot or thrown through a window every other case. Cole somehow survives some firefights so intense that even the likes of John McClane would question the logic of continuing, and Cole even manages to endear the affection of many a woman despite his marital status.
The Dragonborn
When we first meet the Dragonborn in Skyrim, they are moments away from execution for the gravest of crimes. Luck is not on their side however, as a dragon, tired of the way mankind has been abusing their kind, swoops in and sets the Dragonborn free. The Dragonborn soon learns that they are the first Dragonborn in centuries, bestowed with the gift of shouting, the power of their shouts transformed from a mere power and into a power-user class, and the ability to learn magic and conjure their own weapons.
It’s remarkable how Cole Phelps manages to get out of so many tight spots. When you consider that he has to endure high-speed robberies and shootouts across the highways and byways of Los Angels, it’s a wonder he’s still alive. Perhaps his incredible luck was installed before we even meet him – after all, he managed to survive a plane crash, being run over by a car, and a bomb blast.
