What’s the most powerful Sonic the Hedgehog character? It’s hard to know where to begin when counting all the different versions of the Blue Blur that have appeared in platforming games over the years. There are so many Sonic variants, including several transformations, alternate versions, and all their different outfits.

Over the past 30 years, the Sonic games have given us plenty of different versions of Sonic to play as. Some are slower than others, while some are more combat-focused, but which one can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Shadow the Hedgehog and Eggman? We’ve rounded up all of Sonic’s many forms and his variants to bring you the most powerful Sonic character.

Classic Sonic

Long before Sonic Generations, Classic Sonic starred in some of the best retro platformers. He’s defeated powerful foes including Metal Sonic and the Death Egg Robot, showing that he’s more than capable of taking down the most fearsome opponents.

In games like Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Classic Sonic is back to his speedy self, with his spin dash and the ability to curl up into a ball that he had in the 16-bit games. He also has a few new moves, like the Light Speed Dash that lets him cross large gaps. He’s not quite as powerful as he used to be, but he’s still very strong, even if he can’t take on Eggman’s most powerful machines alone.

Boom Sonic

Boom Sonic might not be the fastest, but he’s certainly one of the strongest. He can destroy robots with a few punches, and he can pull off some spectacular combos. Boom Sonic uses the power of music to his advantage, using the Rhythm Hammer to both attack and solve puzzles.

Sonic Adventure Sonic

Sonic Adventure had a lot of new ideas for the series, and one of the most noticeable was the ability to cross large gaps with the Light Speed Dash. This version of Sonic also has the ability to summon fire at will with the Flame Ring, and can punch out enemies with his Hand Sonic weapon.

Modern Sonic

If you love Sonic’s spin dash, then you may be disappointed by the recent games, which replaced the iconic move with the Boost ability. Modern Sonic can still cross large gaps with his signature dash, but it’s less powerful. Modern Sonic is still quite strong, though, and you can take on the strongest bosses with some practice.

Sonic Frontiers expands his moveset thanks to the skill tree, giving you even more ways to fight and explore. With the right loadout, Boom Sonic can be more of a tank than a speedster. You can enhance his speed and strength, giving him an arsenal of devastating combos, making him a more well-rounded fighter than Boom Sonic.

Werehog

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced us to the Werehog, a shape-shifting version of Sonic that has the ability to stretch his arms. The lack of speed is a bit of a problem, but Werehog makes up for it with some pure strength. His best move, ‘Sweep’, lets him slam the ground, causing shockwaves and hitting any enemies around him.

Darkspine Sonic

While Super Sonic is undoubtedly the most iconic transformation, Darkspine Sonic may be the most powerful. He can fly and slow down time to have some truly brutal attacks in hand-to-hand combat. While his speed is lacking, he can summon fire for some brutal attacks.

Excalibur Sonic

In Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic acquires the legendary sword Excalibur. As the name implies, this weapon is incredibly powerful, able to cut through anything with relative ease. In addition to its incredible strength, Excalibur Sonic can turn into a meteor, crashing down on enemies and obstacles.

Super Sonic

As long as Sonic has rings, he’s invincible. Super Sonic’s speed is incredible, and he’s strong enough to take down almost any enemy. He’s the best version of Sonic for the occasional speedrun of a classic game.

Hyper Sonic

After collecting all the Chaos Emeralds and Super Emeralds, Hyper Sonic can do everything Super Sonic can. The only difference is that he can fly much faster than his supercharged counterpart.

And there you have it, the most powerful versions of the fastest hedgehog alive. If you’re looking for some of the best Sonic games, we’ve got a few suggestions for you.
