The Owl House: A Magical Journey of Friendship and Queer Representation
The Owl House is still captivating fans two years after its end, with its magical adventures, heartwarming friendships, and queer relationships still filling our timelines on social media. That’s right, queer relationships. The episode “Through The Looking Glass Ruins” aired on July 10, 2021, marking a significant moment for the show, and one that has left an impact on its fandom even months later.
The episode primarily focuses on Gus’s quest with two-faced students of Glandus High, but the true magic lies with Luz and Amity’s emotional journey in the library. From adorable blushes to awkward silences, their interactions are filled with the tension of developing romantic feelings. Amity risks her job at the library to get closer to Luz, and we soon find out that she doesn’t just want to find clues about the portal door and Philip Wittibane – she wants to be with Luz.
The two are caught, and their bond is revealed to be more than friendship. Amity’s transformation in this episode showcases her rebellion against her strict mother and her embrace of her queer identity. Despite this being an episode full of magic, monsters, and mayhem (and an amazing song), it’s the magical kiss between Luz and Amity that is the true pivotal moment. As the two finally kiss for the first time, we see them look lovingly into each other’s eyes, and the fandom went wild.
This kiss comes at a time where queer representation on Disney Channel is especially important. While the show is certainly not perfect and has its fair share of problematic moments, creator Dana Terrace successfully delivered a show that is both macabre and heartfelt. While it is a Disney Channel show, it managed to pursue its LGBTQ+ ambitions without compromise.
The impact of this two-year-old kiss still remains, especially considering where their relationship ends up (don’t worry, no spoilers here). While some shows that feature queer characters end up erasing them or sidelining them in favour of heterosexual pairings, that’s not the case for The Owl House. It’s a show that truly embraces all its characters, queer or otherwise, and that’s what makes it so special.
While the fandom may be filled with shippers for Gus and Amity, we remember this episode for Luz and Amity’s emotional journey, and that magical kiss that made us all believe that the #OwlHouseShip would last forever.
