The best looking console is a hotly contested topic
The best looking console is a hotly contested topic, with some people choosing the PS2 to top the list, while others dismiss the console’s appeal as nostalgia goggles. Most gamers have their own favorite console, and whether it’s the NES, the Dreamcast, or the Xbox, there’s bound to be some agreement on the best looking console’s sleek design.
It’s easy to understand why the PlayStation 2 is considered by many to be the best looking console. Many people immediately associate the original fat PS3 or the GameCube with a glorious golden age of Gaming, but the PS2 was the first console to really nail that next-gen look and feel. It’s the most successful console of all time and a favorite for many gamers for its ability to play all those beloved PS1 games and for its simple, satisfying, next-gen design.
The PS2 may be considered by some as the best-looking console of all time, but there’s also a good deal of dissent. Some people dismiss the PS2’s appeal as nothing more than nostalgia goggles. Others argue that the GameCube and Xbox 360 have just as cool designs. We’re not here to prove any points one way or another, but we’d be remiss to ignore the love the community has for the PS2. So, we’ve collected some of the best PS2 memories we could find about its design.
Here are some of the best PS2 memories about its design:
Rotate the PS logo
The ability to rotate the PS logo is an oft-forgotten feature of the PS2, but one user, whose PS2 recently broke, remembers it fondly. “Now that I think about it, I do miss the console being able to rotate the PlayStation logo,” they write. “I’m sure that’s not a big deal to most people, but it was a super simple and unique thing that I always appreciated.”
The blue and green lights on startup
“I miss the blue and green lights on startup,” writes another user. “They were just aesthetically pleasing.”
The simple shape
“I guess the PS2 just doesn’t look like a wifi router,” writes one user. “I appreciate that.” Another writes, “I actually like the shape of the PS2. It’s just a simple rectangle, which is brilliant and timeless. Some of the PS4 designs are nice, but they’re still a bit over-designed.”
The PS2 slim
Another favorite is the PS2 slim, which is widely hailed as one of the best-looking consoles ever: “The PS2 slim is my favorite console ever and it’s not close,” writes one user. “It was beautiful and compact. Sony should’ve just kept this design for the PS4 instead of making it look like a VCR.”
The best PS2 games
There’s also a lot of love for the case design of the original PS2, which was originally intended for the Atari Falcon line of computers. It originally came from an Atari design, but Sony was the one to bring it to market. “They hired some designers to come up with the case design and it was originally intended for Atari’s Falcon line of computers,” writes one user. “But Sony liked it and it became the PlayStation 2.”
Some even argue that the PlayStation 2 is the best-looking console of all time, with the PS4 as a close second. “I’m gonna stand by the PS2 being the best-looking console of all time,” writes one user. “I get that it’s nostalgia, but the shape of it, the minimalistic design, the sharp logo, and the ability to rotate it are all brilliant and timeless. It’s a stupid, sexy rectangle.”
Another writes, “I hate consoles from that era, but I will give credit where credit is due and say the Dreamcast design is actually very nice.”
And that’s all we have for now, but we’ll be sure to update this feature with more memories as they come in. If you have any memories of your own to share, please do in the comments below.
