The MSI Equips RTX 4060 Ti 16GB Graphics Card with a Unique Power Connector
The upcoming MSI RTX 4060 Ti 16GB graphics card will utilize a beefier version of Nvidia's new 16-pin power connectors, despite the GPU's expected power draw of less than 150W. While it is unclear why the company has chosen to use these more robust connectors, it could be to simplify the installation process for users. This decision is quite interesting considering the relatively low power consumption of the RTX 4060 Ti.
MSI's new graphics card is scheduled to be released on July 18 and will directly compete with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and 2060. The higher-end GPU will likely serve as a more affordable alternative to the GeForce RTX 2060 Ti, and we already have a good understanding of what to anticipate.
MSI's RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Slim will feature a standard dual-slot design with a unique triple-fan shroud adorned with a silver and white trim. Render images of the GPU have already been released by the company, and it appears that the model will utilize the same redesigned power connector as the RTX 4070 Founders Edition.
The image below showcases the 16-pin power connector on the RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Slim, but it does not confirm whether the standard version will use the same component. It is possible that the higher-end GPU will introduce this connector, but it would be an unusual decision considering the aforementioned details.
MSI does not appear to have any other reason for employing the beefy 16-pin power connector, as both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the RTX 4060 Ti utilize the same AD106 silicon. The company may aim to minimize installation issues caused by the additional pins, but these concerns should be irrelevant given the lower power consumption.
The RTX 4060 Ti Gaming X Slim is expected to have a TDP equal to or slightly higher than 165W, which makes a single 8-pin PCIe power connector sufficient. In contrast, the 16GB model replaces a single PCIe power connector with a pair of 16-pin connectors, likely serving as a visual indication of its higher price point.
Some graphics cards in the past have used 16-pin power connectors despite higher TDPs, but the revised 12V-2x6 power connector aims to improve user installation. Unfortunately, the angle of the render images does not reveal which version of the 16-pin power connector MSI has opted for.
