The Titanic sub has sunk, and The Simpsons allegedly predicted it nearly two decades ago

The sinking of The Titanic's wreck-discovering submarine has some The Simpsons fans wildly speculating that the long-running cartoon predicted the current situation. The fans believe that The Simpsons anticipated the unfolding events surrounding the submersible's voyage to the Titanic, and its subsequent sinking. OceanGate is the company that aims to take people on expeditions to explore the wreckage of the Titanic, which is famously sunken in the North Atlantic Ocean.

It's perhaps no surprise that a long-running animated TV show has a reputation for making uncanny predictions about real-life events. Oftentimes, The Simpsons' so-called predictions are dismissed as mere coincidences, captured by social media users and pointed out by media outlets. However, in this particular instance, fans are pointing to an episode from 2012 as evidence of their prediction.

In an episode from season 23, titled “The D’oh-cial Network,” Homer Simpson embarks on a submarine voyage to the wreckage of the Titanic. The similarities between the episode's plot and the current situation with OceanGate's Titan submersible have caught the attention of fans, who have taken to social media platforms to share their observations and theories.

“I noticed it as well,” one The Simpsons viewer writes, in response to another social media user who observes the similarities. “The sinking played out exactly as in the episode, except that the crew dived first!”

“How crazy is it that an episode from 2012 on The Simpsons is exactly what happened to this boat?” another fan writes. “[Some] people are superstitious and some aren't but please [don't] look at this as a curse because at the end of the day, it is just a coincidence.”

While some fans find the coincidence fascinating, others see it as further proof of the show's ability to predict future events. Some fans are more skeptical, deriding it as a baseless observation made in hindsight. Of course, it's difficult to unpack the circumstances behind how seemingly foreshadowing moments occur in The Simpsons, but it seems that even the titular family would approve of this observation.

The Titanic is often referenced in popular culture, featuring in hit TV shows, books, and movies. The famous sunken vessel is also a recurring theme in The Simpsons, and it seems the show couldn't resist the temptation to suggest its characters may also one day find their way to the famous underwater site.
