LOTR: Return of the King Remake: Exploring the Possibilities

The PS2 game from over 15 years ago is still a firm fan favourite, and emulated on Gamecube via Dolphin, it’s a great way to revisit it. With the age of the Lord of the Rings franchise now firmly established, and movie tie-in games still prevalent, could a “LOTR: Return of the KingRemake work?

We discuss “LOTR: Return of the King” a lot on PC Game Spotlight, with our recent look at the best open-world games ranking it among the finest. The gameplay holds up, with satisfying combat mechanics and expansive environments. However, the graphics now look a bit dated, with many users expressing a desire for a remastered version.

With the Lord of the Rings games not particularly well regarded, and many movie tie-ins coming out close to movie premieres, there is a suggestion that a remake could be a remastered trilogy, separating the movies into individual games.

“It’s an interesting idea. I would be curious to see the stories fully fleshed out,” one user admits, although another counters that “a game following the entire LOTR journey, with RPG elements and replayability, would be infinitely more appealing than a trilogy of games”, pointing towards “The Third Age” as a good LOTR RPG with turn-based combat.

“The Third Age” is brought up several times, although some do criticise its rather weak story. Another point is made about the timing of movie tie-in games and their potential for spoilers, with the “Shadow of Mordor” games mentioned and praised for the Nemesis system.

There are many comments about how fond people are of “LOTR: Return of the King” and playing it with siblings or friends. One user even makes a funny side comment about reminding a sibling of their inadequacy in a game.

Overall, the comments are overwhelmingly positive, and many users would love to see a remastered version or a re-release on a modern platform. Check out the full thread here.
