Spider-Man and the Scarlet Witch: What If...?
Marvel's What If...? series will be getting a standalone novel that reimagines Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man as siblings, and it sounds riveting—really, really weird, but riveting. We wouldn't expect anything less from the What If...? series, which has consistently pushed the boundaries of Marvel storytelling through its focus on alternate realities and hypothetical scenarios in the Marvel universe."Spider-Man and the Scarlet Witch: What If...?" will offer a fresh perspective on the beloved characters of Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man as it delves into an alternate reality in which they grew up as siblings. Marvel's description of the book says it aims "to provide fans with a fresh and imaginative take on familiar characters and storylines," and this twist on Wanda and Peter definitely meets that criteria.
The first What If...? book, back in 2014, took that idea and ran with it for a limited series that imagined long-unfamliar outcomes for seminal Marvel story arcs like 2016's Civil War II. It often encouraged looking at the characters from new perspectives, as we did when Wolverine decided to cut off his hand and become a wizard instead (it's a good read).
It sounds like this book will put that same idea into a familial context, based on its descriptions of the "unexpected sibling bond" between Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man. I mean, I suppose it could be weirder—they could also be clones, twins, or artificially aged enhanced people raised to think they're siblings. But no, siblings is an infinitely more twisted path to walk, and we look forward to being led through it in this book.
And I would just like to take this opportunity to say, "Thank you, What If?" You have once again proven your worth as the most creatively adventurous Marvel series, and I am already planning a reread of your past works in preparation for this book.
"Spider-Man and the Scarlet Witch: What If...?" is slated for release in the spring of 2019.
