Steam's Latest Update: Improved UI and Introduction of Notes App

Steam’s latest update addresses several niggling UI issues and makes significant improvements to navigation, making the storefront and Library more efficient and accessible than ever before. One notable addition is the introduction of a notes app in the overlay menu. PC game players will be pleased with this new feature, wondering why it wasn't available sooner.

If you’re a player who likes taking notes while gaming, whether it be keeping tabs on trade routes in Warhammer 40,000 or remembering research goals in Civilization, many people find it easier to use a notepad rather than juggling windows or searching for pens and papers. While some games have official and unofficial notes functionality, such as Warhammer End Times Vermintide 2 and F1 2020, Steam did not incorporate this feature natively into the platform.

However, with the latest update, Steam has introduced a notepad in the overlay menu. Although it has likely been available for a while, it is now visible to users. This addition is a welcome and invaluable tool for players who rely on note-taking, offering a much more convenient overlay solution than constantly accessing the Steam overlay. The notepad interface includes transparency features, ensuring it never obstructs gameplay. By using the shift+tab shortcut, players can easily access the Steam overlay and bring up the notepad in just a few clicks. It also remembers previous notes and only displays relevant notes for each game, automatically selecting the appropriate one based on the current game. Additionally, it syncs notes across devices for Steam subscribers.

One significant advantage of the notepad is that it works in offline mode, although it may still require some internet connection for full functionality. Steam has covered all the bases with this addition, enhancing the overall gaming experience for all types of players without targeting specific tastes or preferences.

To access the new notepad, simply use the shift+tab shortcut to access the Steam Overlay and find it under the “game” tab. For even easier access, users can set up a macro. This latest update from Steam is a surprising and welcome addition, demonstrating the platform's commitment to continuously enhancing the gaming experience for all players.
