Assassin's Creed Odyssey menu controls: Ubisoft defends and offers a solution

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey menus “are not that bad”, says Ubisoft

I thought Assassin's Creed Odyssey menu controls were frustrating at first, but after playing for a few hours and learning the layout, I'm not sure why everyone is complaining. While most comments in the thread voice frustration at the controls, Ubisoft dev Tara Voelker uses the opportunity to defend the menus and explains how to change them.

Menu controls are not that bad, honestly,” Voelker says. “There is a UI setting to swap 'L3' and 'R3' if that helps.”

Not everyone is convinced by the response, with one user joking about the 'Nintendo Switch' layout, but other users point out that Assassin's Creed is returning to its roots now that it’s no longer under the control of Ubisoft Montreal.

“When you consider that every AC since Rogue was helmed by a different dev team and studio, it’s not that surprising that they all have different takes on the series,” one user says.

“I never thought I would say this but I’m actually hyped for this game,” another adds. “I love the direction they’re taking it and hope they continue to build on these fundamental features.”

As with any major, highly anticipated release, there are also several comments discussing the RPG mechanics in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and how they compare to Origins. There’s also discussion about microtransactions and how they may feature in the game, and the impact that may have on gameplay.

“Ubisoft hasn’t innovated in ages,” one user says, with another replying, “Ubisoft games: always the same, always boring.”

There are complaints about the lack of effort being put in by gaming companies, and the inclusion of bullet sponge enemies in Ubisoft games. There’s also a lot of disinterest in playing Assassin’s Creed or any Ubisoft games, with a suggestion that players should “just go play Witcher 3 instead,” and “I’d rather play The Witcher 3 than this, even if it’s three years old.”

“I’m so done. I hope AC3 is the last one,” another adds.

“I’m done with AC,” another says. “I’m not pre-ordering and if it’s as good as they say I’ll buy it in 2 years when it’s cheap.”

There are also comments asking if the game has been released yet, with one user responding, “It’s still Assassin’s Creed. It’s still the same as previous installments.”

There’s also a lot of humour in the comments section, with a user describing the game with various genres and elements.

“I suppose you’re still mad about the interface,” another user responds, “Well, I can only recommend you to try the game on PC.”

Another user jokes about the complaint about the interface, writing, “You know, if you really want to fix it, just remove the HUD and camera restrictions, and we can play the game in first person.”

Despite the frustration in the thread, I actually quite like the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey menus – I haven’t found them frustrating at all, and they actually make navigation in the RPG game much easier.
