Ubisoft Responds to Viral Claims

On 20 May, a Reddit post that claimed Ubisoft was deleting games from active accounts went viral, leading to much outrage and finger-pointing. Ubisoft quickly responded to correct the record, but the same post hit the front page of Reddit, leading people to question why the original claims were believed so blindly. Some users express their continued dislike for the company and mention its employment of known abusers, while others find humour in the idea of earning pizza through internet points.

Reading Comprehension Lacking

“People are so dumb,” one user points out. “They don’t read, they don’t understand what they just read, and then they say ‘OMG UBISOFT IS DELETING GAMES FROM ACTIVE ACCOUNTS.’ The lack of reading comprehension on this sub is a common occurrence.”

“Yet another thread where people don’t read, don’t understand what they’re reading, and then get angry that they’re being called out for not reading and understanding,” another user replies. “This happens so often that it’s become a running joke.”

“Guys, I understand the desire to call out false information, but can we get sources to back up the claim that Ubisoft is not deleting games from active accounts?” another user asks. “I’m not saying they aren’t, but this is not a Ubisoft-specific thing, it’s a thing that pretty much all companies that offer digital games do.”

In reply, another user shares a tweet from Ubisoft that says, “Games on your Uplay account can be lost if you don’t log in for 30 days. Don’t forget to check your Uplay account and follow these steps to keep your games safe.”

“So, games can be lost,” one user replies. “Not only games that are on empty accounts, but even games on active accounts that are not logged in for 30 days.”

Another user asks, “So, then, if I’m reading this correctly, if I don’t log into my Uplay account for 30 days after putting a Ubisoft game on hold, I can lose that game? This implies that a game can also be lost if I don’t log into my account at all for 30 days.”

“You can lose a game if you don’t log in for 30 days, and if you don’t log in for 60 days, you can lose your entire account,” comes the reply. “That’s why they are replacing games. So they don’t lose the account.”

Another user shares an article that adds to the confusion by not mentioning the specific clause about empty accounts. “I think this is what is throwing people off,” they suggest.

“The original post is not credible and the author did not provide a source,” another user replies. “The follow-up post is also not credible, because it lacks sources.”

“Anyway, we’re on Reddit,” another user replies. “The entire point of this sub is to blindly believe and upvote false information that supports our personal biases.”

“There’s a meme on this sub that says, ‘if it’s on Reddit it must be true,’” another replies. “I’m done responding to these threads because I’m just going to be mocked for calling out blatantly false information.”

“To be clear, I’m not mocking anyone for calling out blatantly false information,” another user replies. “I’m mocking people for blindly believing and upvoting said blatantly false information.”

“It seems like news sources are not trustworthy,” another replies. “So then how do we verify that information is correct? I want to make sure I’m not getting false information.”

“You do that by verifying the news source,” another replies. “Don’t blindly trust articles.”

“Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of articles with false information,” another replies. “This one doesn’t even mention the specific clause about empty accounts.”

“I think the people who are pushing this false information are just trying to generate panic and entitlement,” one user replies.

“I was going to buy Assassin’s Creed: Rebellion today, but now I’m holding off until I can guarantee that I’ll be able to keep the game if I stop playing for a while,” another replies. “I mean, what if the world is taken over by frogs? I’d hate to lose a game I paid for.”

“I’m the party pooper,” another replies. “I think this is hilarious. Everyone posting that they’re going to hold off on buying games is hilarious.”

“I’m also a party pooper,” another replies. “I think this is ridiculous. I’ve had games on my Uplay account for over a decade. I was planning on buying AC Rebellion tomorrow, but I’m not going to because of this.”
