Are Ubisoft games all just the same?
It feels like there’s a perception among some of our users that Ubisoft’s games all share a similar structure, becoming repetitive and losing their appeal over time. The Assassin’s Creed series is often cited as the worst offender, with the RPG games in particular being seen as a poor imitation of Dragon Age: Origins or The Witcher 3.
But other users disagree, and point to the differences between titles like Assassin’s Creed II, Black Flag, and Odyssey. We’ve also seen plenty of praise for certain Ubisoft games, like Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Assassin’s Creed Origins, and the possibility of a Black Flag remake or remaster is raised, along with the idea that Skull and Bones could become a multiplayer mode for Black Flag. So, which side of the argument do you fall on?
User perspectives
“I loved the game,” says a user about Ghost Recon: Wildlands. “It was my first open-world game, and it still holds up as one of the best. The depiction of fighting a drug cartel, the story, and the stealth gameplay are excellent.”
“I still remember enjoying the first Assassin’s Creed a lot,” another user replies. “I’m a little older so the games were very new to me. I thought they were pretty good, but as the series went on, Ubisoft started to prioritize money over passion. I think that’s why we have games with numerous paywalls and low effort.”
“The last Assassin’s Creed game I really loved was Black Flag,” another user says. “Since then, the series has become more of an RPG game than an action game and I have lost interest. I stopped playing Syndicate after a few hours because I just don’t feel like playing it anymore.”
“I also used to like Assassin’s Creed,” another replies. “I played every game and enjoyed them to some extent. I used to want to buy every Ubisoft game, but now I just don’t care. I think they were a lot more passionate about their games back in the day, but now they just care about money.”
“I used to be like you,” another user replies. “I used to really like the older AC games, but the series has really disappointed me. I used to really like the RPG games, especially Syndicate and Origins, but I think Assassin’s Creed could benefit from a long break and a reinvention, or a departure from the series’ lore.”
“The Assassin’s Creed series is the perfect example of why I think Ubisoft prioritizes money over passion,” another replies. “Games like The Division, Far Cry Primal, Trials, and so on all have numerous paywalls and are just clearly low effort, especially considering all the other games they can make with the same engine.”
“I love the way they structure their content delivery,” another user replies, referring to Yakuza Zero and other games like it. “They just keep adding little sidequests and new areas to explore and you can go at your own pace. I wish Ubisoft took note.”
“I used to like the earlier AC games,” another replies, “but I can’t really remember anything about them. The last memorable characters were Desmond Miles and Ezio.”
“I loved Far Cry 2 and 3,” another replies. “But I think the quality of Ubisoft games has definitely decreased over time. I used to really like the open-world games, but now I see them as soulless.”
“I agree. That’s the best way to describe Ubisoft’s games,” another replies. “All their games have generic UI, boring missions, and immersion-breaking elements like weird dogs in Wildlands. They’re soulless.”
“I really enjoyed Ghost Recon: Wildlands,” another user replies. “It was my first open-world game and I always go back to it. The story is fun, there’s a lot of freedom, the world was gorgeous, and the wildlife was so interesting. I’ve played every Assassin’s Creed game, but I’ve always found them to be a bit boring compared to Wildlands.
