Amnesia: The Bunker

The Amnesia: The Bunker monster is the primary antagonist of the latest Frictional Games Horror game. This mutated creature, simply dubbed The Beast, is unlike any creature we’ve seen in games before. Towering over you like a twisted, mutated mole, The Beast’s appearance is immediately unsettling, and its resilience to damage makes it a terrifying foe that adds to the horror of Amnesia: The Bunker.

The Beast was first encountered by French soldiers during the war. It’s the only one of its kind, and it’s almost impossible to kill. That’s all we know about The Beast for now, but as you make your way through the dark, dank tunnels of Amnesia: The Bunker, you’ll encounter this mutated horror again and again. The Bunker itself is the setting of Amnesia: The Bunker, and it’s a place of nightmares even before The Beast arrives.

Amnesia: The Bunker review

In ancient times, the Bunker was a site of an ancient Mithraic Cult ritual. It caused those inside to experience hallucinations and madness. As you explore the dusty halls, you’ll discover the remnants of those who came before you, their bodies contorted in fear and pain. As you progress, Amnesia: The Bunker begins to warp your mind as well, causing strange visions and confusing pathways.

At some point during the war, The Beast was born. It’s unclear whether The Beast is a man transformed by the strange water in a cavern, or a beast mutated from the strange water. Either way, Amnesia: The Bunker reveals that Augustin Lambert, a French soldier, drank the water and was transformed into The Beast. Augustin periodically transforms into this monstrous form, and he is responsible for slaughtering the soldiers in the Bunker.

Amnesia: The Bunker – the good and the bad

The Beast is incredibly durable, but it relies on sound to navigate the dark tunnels. You can deter The Beast by using fire, explosives, or gunshots, but it always comes back. You can’t kill The Beast, but there are ways to escape it. In fact, that’s what Amnesia: The Bunker teaches you to do – how to hide and run.

The Beast serves as a roadblock in the game’s finale. As you approach the Bunker’s exit, The Beast emerges from the shadows, blocking your path. You can either fight or escape from The Beast, but don’t expect to kill it. The game’s ending is somewhat impacted by your choice regarding The Beast, but it doesn’t change too much.

The final encounter with The Beast takes place in an ancient arena within the tunnels. You can lure the creature onto breakable boards to drop it into an abyss, or raise/lower bridges to escape. Your other option is to fight The Beast, though it doesn’t appear in the last cutscene.

That doesn’t mean The Beast is done yet. If you flee from The Beast, it makes a final appearance in the last moments of the game. As you approach the exit, The Beast emerges from the shadows, seemingly looking right at you. The screen cuts to black, and we’re left with only one question – what’s next for The Beast?

The ending is left ambiguous as The Beast disappears into the woods, drawing the attention of a German patrol. Whatever happens to The Beast, it’s made an impact on you as well. The Beast was an unwelcome addition to the experience, but it was an important one.

That’s everything we know about the main enemy in Amnesia: The Bunker. Check out our Amnesia: The Bunker review to find out what we thought about the latest horror game from Frictional Games.
