A Dark Souls Anime: Mixed Reactions from Fans

A Dark Souls Anime is reportedly on the way, and reactions from fans are mixed. While some cite Netflix’s recent success with other animated series like Cyberpunk 2077 and Castlevania, others lament previous adaptations like Dragon’s Dogma and Blood of Zeus. The Castlevania adaptation is a particular subject of debate, with some users praising the anime and others criticizing its animation and writing.

“I’d rather have them just make Dark Souls 3,” one user comments, while another replies, “Dark Souls 3 is already a videogame.” Some users argue that Castlevania is a good adaptation, with others pointing out that the show’s animation has improved since its first season. Still, others suggest that the emotional investment in Dark Souls comes from the player’s experience in the game, rather than through a passive viewing experience.

“I am very worried about how this will be done,” another user comments. “The closest thing I can think of is Sword Art Online, which was a complete disaster.” They play devil’s advocate, though, stating, “Dark Souls doesn’t need to follow the exact story of the games. They can focus on capturing the mood and feel of the series.”

Another user mentions the potential for a Dark Souls anime to explore the events leading up to the games, which could be especially interesting given how many fan theories there are about the series’ lore. They also suggest that the anime would benefit from a sense of humor, as Dark Souls is known for its dark and somber tone.

“The problem is that a significant portion of Dark Souls is silent,” another user replies. “Can you even make that enjoyable?” Some users also express trepidation about the use of the term “anime” for non-Japanese animated shows.

“Anime means animation in Japanese,” one user comments. “You can call it anime, or animated, or animated series.” Another replies, “The Japanese industry doesn’t call it anime, they call it anime.” A third user suggests, “Just give the job of adapting Dark Souls to a studio like Trigger or MAPPA.”

There are also some strong reactions against the idea of a Dark Souls adaptation, with some expressing a sense of sacredness around the game and concern that it will be ruined for new players. Others simply express a dislike of anime in general.

“I’m not an anime fan,” one user comments. “I’m a fan of animation.” Several users express support for the idea of exploring different animation styles, with one writing, “I love anime, but I also like all kinds of animation.” Others dismissively refer to fans of anime as “weebs.”
