Theatrhythm Final Bar Line Review: A Celebration of All Things Final Fantasy

The Theatrhythm Final Bar Line review is finally here, and it’s safe to say that, as an avid Final Fantasy enthusiast, I was more than pleased with what I played. In fact, it’s my new favorite Theatrhythm game. With 385 songs, 104 playable characters, and multiple modes that accommodate different play styles, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is a celebration of all things Final Fantasy.

As someone who has played Final Fantasy games since the very first Final Fantasy 2 release on the Famicom, I can confidently say that there are plenty of incredible references that pay homage to the rich history of Final Fantasy throughout Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. There are also subtle nods to older titles, such as musical arrangements of classic battle themes from Final Fantasy 4 and 6, and fan-favorite characters appearing in the game’s story mode.

But it’s not just subtle nods and references; Theatrhythm Final Bar Line offers you a chance to experience some incredible things you might have never tried before. There are multiple difficulty levels for each song, challenging you to play more complex versions of classic tracks. The inclusion of the iconic Aerith’s Theme from Final Fantasy 7 is a moment I will never forget; any Final Fantasy 7 fan would agree. The game revives the renowned Active Time Battle (ATB) system from previous titles, including fan favorites like Final Fantasy 7 and 8.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is a true celebration of Final Fantasy, and Square Enix pays homage to the classic ATB system fans have adored for decades. The presence of iconic summons like Ifrit and Bahamut as formidable allies showcases the game’s dedication to catering to loyal fans of Final Fantasy.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line allows you to customize your characters with costumes from different Final Fantasy installments, which is always a fun addition to any rhythm game. One aspect that true enthusiasts will immediately notice and appreciate is the familiar enemy sound effects from past titles. I was delighted to hear the sound of Behemoth’s footsteps in the background while fighting against the Abysteel enemies in Final Fantasy 4’s music stage.

Any Final Fantasy fan would instantly recognize the iconic Buster Sword, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7, and the upgrades you can earn for it pay homage to pivotal moments in Cloud’s journey. As you embark on your rhythmic adventures, guiding Cloud’s steps through various musical stages, you can’t help but feel a deeper connection to his character.

The Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare in Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is more than just a homage to the series’ legacy. In Final Fantasy 6, you are introduced to the whimsical realm of Chocobo racing. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line offers another opportunity to engage with these iconic creatures.

Perhaps my favorite thing about Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is the fact that it challenges you, but it also doesn’t take itself too seriously. The enemies are comical, and the bosses from each game, such as Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy 5, Chaos from 6, Sephiroth from 7, and Ultimecia in 8, appear as special enemies with unique attacks and strategies for you to overcome.

If you are a true Final Fantasy fan, there is no way you can pass up Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. It is a celebration of the series’ rich history, but it also provides an opportunity for newcomers to experience some of the greatest games of all time. If you’re interested in playing Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, you can pre-register for the game to receive an in-game costume and an extra song at launch.
