Some SquareSoft JRPGs from the Golden Era

When it comes to JRPGs, SquareSoft leads the pack in terms of sheer quality. While many of their games have been discussed in the same breath, from Final Fantasy to Chrono Trigger, some are left out, like Final Fantasy VI. Others look back fondly on games like Kingdom Hearts and Brave Fencer Musashi, with one even ranking Kingdom Hearts in their top 3 games of all time.

A user brings up the Kingdom Hearts series, highlighting the mix of Final Fantasy and Disney, and how most people only consider the first and third games. They highlight the fog level in Vagrant Story, a game often considered one of the best JRPGs ever made. And there are just so many fond memories of playing various SquareSoft titles during that era.

“Some of my fondest gaming memories are of playing games I’d never heard of before,” one user shares. “Games like Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Ehrgeiz, Threads of Fate, and many others that were never popular or well-known but were some of my favourite games to play at the time.”

Some bring up games like Brave Fencer Musashi and Xenogears, hoping that they’ll see remakes or reboots. Others have a lot of praise for the PlayStation console as the best platform for RPGs, with one user even arguing that the PlayStation 2’s backwards compatibility makes it obsolete for playing PSX games.

“I’d say the PSX was their last truly great console,” one user says. “The PS2 had the best JRPG library, but it was the best overall console.” They go on to mention the bug in Chrono Cross on the newest model of PS2 slim, but most games run fine. One user even mentions the controversial opinion that SquareSoft peaked at FF6 and FF7 was their last good game.
