Amnesia: The Bunker
The latest installment in the Amnesia series takes players through a parallel universe traveling through different periods and locations. As different characters, they face disturbing situations with a disturbing creature in a disturbing world as part of a disturbing lore. But to the editor, The Bunker is the most frightening Amnesia game because of its unique layout and setting that create an atmosphere that’s all its own.
Setting and Suspense
Set during World War I, The Bunker puts the player inside a WWI bunker during a bloody battle that transformed the building into a hellish, claustrophobic nightmare. The most contained installment in the series thus far, Amnesia: The Bunker still offers the same scares fans of the Horror game have been accustomed to over the last decade. Placing the players in a labyrinthine system of hallways and rooms, The Bunker presents a layout that only serves to bolster the suspense and terror that have come to define Amnesia.
Giant Mutated Rats and Constant Terror
The Bunker introduces giant mutated rats into the mix, providing additional threats alongside the monster and providing different ways to deal with them. Rather than being a shadow in the darkness, the monster becomes the constant presence. The players are relentlessly pursued in the name of something only the plot can explain.
Eerie Ambience and Art Direction
Adding to The Bunker’s eerie ambiance is the visual art direction of the 2D collectibles, specifically the different sets of photographs and sketches. These sets, like the rest of the game, are in black and white, but they pop and shine; the black-and-white shading makes the visual art come alive and adds some much-needed depth to the storytelling.
References to the Other World and Alternate Endings
Amnesia: The Bunker isn’t the first game in the series to reference the Other World and the Orbs, but it’s the first in which the editor notices them as much as they did. The journal entries and visual elements that appeared in previous games are present in this one as well, with notes and visual art depicting the horrors of the world outside the bunker. Adding to the editor's enjoyment are the alternate endings that The Bunker introduces. Depending on the player's strategy, they can get an alternate ending - it involves grenades and the use of the monster’s weaknesses on platforms. If players are looking for an additional accomplishment and a different ending to Amnesia: The Bunker, there they go.
