You have the choice to either leave him to his doom or find the necessary equipment to save him. But be warned, this is a difficult task that requires careful preparation and swift Action. Here's how you can save the German prisoner in Amnesia: The Bunker and earn the rare Life Preserver achievement.
How to save the German prisoner in Amnesia: The Bunker
Before attempting to save the German prisoner, make sure you are well-prepared. You will need a specific tool that becomes available later in the game. First, ensure that you have the wrench, which can be obtained in the Maintenance section of the map. This tool is necessary for unscrewing vent covers, including the one leading to the Warden's Office where the cell door control panel is located.
Since you don't have the tool needed to access the control panel, you'll need to find fuel canisters elsewhere in the bunker. The generator in the Administrator's Office powers the cell door control panel, so make sure it is fueled in order to unlock the German prisoner's cell door. If the generator is out of fuel, return to the Maintenance section and refuel it before proceeding.

It is also crucial to carry ammunition for your revolver, as it allows you to temporarily stun the monster and protect yourself during the rescue. Ammunition is scarce, so use it wisely.
The German prisoner is located in the third cell on the right side of the cellblock entrance. He is bound to a chair and shouting in German, so you might not notice him at first. Look for a pair of bolt cutters on a table beside him. Make sure your inventory has enough space to pick them up, as you won't be able to leave the cellblock without them.
Exit the cellblock, turn left, and find a destroyable wooden door. Pass through it, take a right, and find the vent cover leading to the Warden's Office. Unlocking the metal door in this room will save you time in future trips.
The Cell Door Control Panel in the Warden's Office allows you to open the German prisoner's cell door. Be prepared for the monster's immediate arrival after unlocking the cell door. Shoot at the monster with your revolver to scare it away, then swiftly retrieve the bolt cutters and return to the Warden's Office to lock the cell door.
If the monster returns before you can lock the cell door, use your revolver to stun it temporarily and buy yourself more time. Successfully completing this rescue mission, locking the cell door, and keeping the German prisoner alive grants you the coveted Life Preserver achievement.
