Layers Of Fear Painter's Story ending information

Want to know the Layers of Fear Painter's Story ending? The first story in Layers Of Fear has the most complex ending requirements among all the stories in the remake. The game was notorious for the hidden factors that influence the story's ending in the original, and the remake keeps that same air of mystery – although, since the story is changed quite a bit in the remaster, you may still be surprised by which actions matter at which decision points.

Owing to the changes that Layers of Fear made to the story itself, the first game from designer Teddy Dief is possibly the most-changed out of all of the games collected here, so even if you know the 2016 version by heart you may find some surprises waiting for you! If you keep finding yourself trapped in the Loop Ending, it might just take you a few changes to tip the scales toward Art or Family. Use this guide to see what you can do for a more satisfying conclusion!

Layers Of Fear Painter's Story ending information

As you progress through the Painter's Story, the game secretly tracks two separate scores, pushing you toward the Art ending or the Family ending. Based on your decisions and actions, the final tally will determine your ending when you finish the painting at the end of Chapter Six.

In general, collecting items and taking paths related to the Musician and the Daughter will push you toward the Family ending, while collecting items and taking paths related to the Painter or the Rat Queen will push you toward the Art ending. There are some hidden factors at play as well, which we'll detail below.

At the end of the story, if one score is significantly higher than the other, you'll get the related ending; while if neither score is high enough you'll get the Loop Ending, which we describe in detail below. The exact values of each action and the required score for the Art and Family endings are unknown, so it's best to do everything that you possibly can to get the ending that you want while avoiding the other ending.

Layers of Fear Painter's story decision point values

The biggest factors in determining which ending you receive are the decision points, which are generally indicated by a scale drawing hidden nearby. Completing a decision point will push you toward one of the two main endings, and will always drop a memento (Family) or a rat sketch (Art) afterward. Since these factors appear to be hidden indicators rather than set values, your best bet for getting one particular ending is to do everything you possibly can to complete all decision points related to that ending.

Here are the values of each action that we spotted during our play-throughs:
