Zombie and post-apocalyptic storylines are nothing new to video gaming, but they've never looked better than on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. With their great performance and astounding refresh rates, you sometimes feel like you're actually coming face to face with the undead creatures in real life.

With so many PS4 and PS5 zombie games available, it can be tricky to separate the bites from the bad ones. That's why we've curated this list of the best zombie games for PS4 and PS5. Some of them are downright terrifying, others take zombies in a comical and sometimes even funny direction, and others might be the best-looking games you've ever played. They even introduce zombies to novel genres like games based on road trips. Check out our list of the best zombie games for PS4 and PS5 below.

The best zombie games:

Riptide: New World

Days Gone

An action-adventure title taking place in a post-apocalyptic version of Oregon, you play as a biker named Deacon St. John, who is on the search for his wife. The world has been torn asunder by an infection, and as Deacon, you're equipped with a chain bike and an axe, ready to take on swarms of the undead on the overgrown highways and landscapes of America. While the story can be cheesy and cliched at times, the action makes this one of the best zombie games to play if you're looking to get in touch with your inner maverick.

The first Dead Island wasn't very well received by players or critics, but the response to the sequel is much better. This bloody battle royale-style driving game takes place on an island where a virus has infected the populace. You can either play solo or in up to four-player co-op as a series of characters in a variety of vehicles. One of you must drive an ark to safety. It's a fun, ridiculous option for fans of zombie games.

The Walking Dead

The original 2013 release of The Last of Us was still enjoyable and visually impressive, but the remake of the game for the PlayStation 5 is astounding. While it's not technically a zombie game (zombies play a minor role in it, to say the least), it has definitely earned its place on our list. It's a more narrative adventure than a Horror game too, so if you're looking for something fun that goes against the grain, this impressive adventure also works as a zombie game.

First launched in the late '90s for PS1, Resident Evil 2 was remade in 2019 for the PlayStation 4. You play as a police officer named Leon Kennedy or college student Claire Redfield, trying to escape a zombified Raccoon City with your lives. The FFIX-style third-person gameplay and tank-like controls work surprisingly well for this horror game too.

Dead Cells

A less talked about title that will excite fans of classic-era NES games like Castlevania, Dead Cells is a roguelike platformer that sees you fight your way through predetermined levels of randomly generated 3D environments. No matter where you encounter the undead, there's no shortage of weapons to shred, hack, and slash the hapless zombie horde. While it can become repetitive with extended play, the first few hours are some of the most fun you'll have with an addictive game built around the tried-and-tested formula.

A 2010 expansion pack to Rockstar's blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare offers a silly take on the zombie genre in the form of a single-player campaign and multiplayer options. The main story sees you attempt to save the day as John Marston, while the multiplayer options allow up to eight gamers to take part in co-op zombie survival. If you've ever wanted to save Red Dead Redemption's version of America from destruction, here's your time.

While the Dying Light series offers several great games, The Following is the pinnacle of this narrative so far. In our Dying Light: The Following review, we called it 'a pitch-perfect standalone expansion that improves almost every aspect of its parent game,' earning its spot on our list of the best games released in 2021.
