Intel's 6th Generation Xeon Scalable 'Granite Rapids-AP' Processor
The 6th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor, codenamed 'Granite Rapids-AP,' has been revealed in leaked photos by renowned hardware leaker YuuKi_AnS. This highly anticipated CPU is expected to be released in 2024 or 2025, but we already have some insights into its features.
The 'Granite Rapids-AP' processor is the successor to the 'Sapphire Rapids-AP' and 'Emerald Rapids-AP' chips, and it will share a platform with the codenamed Sierra Forest processor.
The leaked photos offer a glimpse of the engineering samples of the 'Granite Rapids' processor. These samples exhibit noticeable differences compared to existing Xeon Scalable CPUs. The chips appear larger, featuring wider traces and a larger I/O area.
According to YuuKi_AnS, server makers are already conducting tests on these CPUs. This means that the product could be less than two years away from its official release.
The upcoming 'Granite Rapids' processors are expected to offer a higher core count than their predecessors, potentially surpassing the number of cores available on Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids CPUs. Additionally, these chips will feature a 12-channel DDR5 memory subsystem that supports DDR5-6400 modules and higher-performance DDR5-8000 MCR DIMMs.
In terms of bandwidth, the fully populated memory subsystem on the 'Granite Rapids-AP' chip can deliver an impressive 614.4 GB/s to 768 GB/s. This represents a significant improvement over the 307.2 GB/s bandwidth available on Sapphire Rapids processors.
Moreover, the 'Granite Rapids-AP' and 'Sierra Forest-AP' CPUs are expected to offer up to 96 PCIe Gen 5 lanes, which support the CXL protocol for accelerators/co-processors, storage devices, memory expanders, and other PCIe-enabled devices.
The upcoming platform will also include critical CPU features such as PFR 4.0 root of trust, a new RunBMC AST26000 module, and OCP 3.0 network cards.
Staying informed about the latest advancements in technology is crucial if you want to stay on the cutting edge. So, while we await more information on the 'Granite Rapids-AP' processor, we leave you with this image of our own water-cooled server, proudly featuring an Intel 6800K processor:
