The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is filled with enigmatic characters and locations, but one name in particular stands out: Rauru. This mysterious figure appears at various points in the game and even acts as a guide to Link, but who exactly is this person?

Who is Rauru?

Rauru appears in Tears of the Kingdom as a mysterious figure that is heavily associated with the owl statues and the Zonai. When Zelda and Link discover the skeletal body of Ganondorf, a mysterious voice asks, "Do you know who this is?" and answers with, "He is the one who has brought ruin upon this land countless times..." It then goes on to reveal that Ganondorf once wielded Rauru’s Right Arm, and that the power of the Triforce of Power was sealed within it.

We do get to meet Rauru in person, although he is now a spirit. He seems to serve as a guide to Link in a similar fashion to King Rhoam in Breath of the Wild. Link completes the Shrines of Light on the Great Sky Island with Rauru’s guidance, and the ancient hero reveals information about the founding of Hyrule and the Constructs on the islands.

Rauru’s Right Arm once belonged to him, although it was taken by Ganondorf. The Dragon’s Tears provide further insight into Rauru’s character through Zelda’s memories. Rauru founded Hyrule alongside his wife Sonia and fought against Ganondorf. The king eventually sacrificed himself to save Hyrule by allowing Ganondorf to steal his Right Arm. Rauru’s spirit and that of his wife Mineru then departed to the afterlife, leaving no Zonai behind.

That’s all we know about Rauru in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Rauru’s name has appeared in other titles in the series, and this has led to some speculation about possible connections. The Rauru in Ocarina of Time is a different character, but they do share some similarities. Both characters serve as mentors to Link and have connections to owls.

There are also areas named after Rauru in other games, such as the Rauru Valley in Oracle of Seasons and the Rauru River in Skyward Sword. The Zonai are absent in the current era, but it’s interesting to note that there are hints of more Zonai in the past. The fate of the Zonai and Rauru’s ancestors remains a mystery, but there are hints of more Zonai in the past, such as the Sheikah tapestry that appears in Nayru Tower. It shows an ancient hero with a striking resemblance to a Zonai, and there’s speculation that they were a member of this ancient race.

The Rauru from Ocarina of Time shares a similar backstory to the Tears of the Kingdom Rauru, with both their arms being taken by Ganondorf. There are also owls in the past, although we don’t know if they have any connection to the Zonai. As for the Rauru in Majora’s Mask, this character shares the name with the first king but doesn’t appear to be related.

In any case, the Rauru in Tears of the Kingdom is very different from the others, with multiple Zonai and no apparent connection to owls. It’s possible that this Rauru is entirely unique to this game, or he could be a descendant of one of the other characters bearing the same name.

The Rauru in Tears of the Kingdom acts as a guide, much like King Rhoam in Breath of the Wild.
